Soren Kierkigaard, was an influential philosopher of contemporary period, in the history of philosophy. His philosophy revolves around existence of individual and being a theistic philosopher has been pioneer of morality and religious philosophy. Truth, choice and God essential are elements of his philosophy ,besides that morality and aesthetics are embedded in his philosophical approach. Soren Kierkigaard, examined and analyzed human life with precision and divided the life into three significant stages, owing to confusion and chaos prevailing in deciding to live the life without embracing boredom and falling into the caves of depression. The fundamental metaphysical problem surrounding the Kierkigaards philosophy is sickness which leads to the door of death. As how could life be lived by an individual without being swept by the tides of despair and boredrom. This is the fundamental question of Kierkigaards philosophy.
For making this metaphysical issue explicit, Kierkigaard splits life of individual into three main stages , without having influence on each other and every stage could be lived separately or in inclusive way ,living all three stages simultaneously. The stages are Aesthetic stage , Moral stage, and religious stage. During the course of aesthetic stage an individual is guided by passion, emotions and romantic impulses .The stage is compressively dominated by sensual pleasures ,an individual sees and feels life is nothing beyond the human emotions, and thus is always in thirst of pleasures .Not only things are utilized to gain pleasure but human itself is considered as source of pleasure and thus is classified as an object. However , in following these sensual pleasures an individual realizes these things are fleeting under the pressure of times tide and passing at terrific pace .Once , the individual realizes this passing of pleasures, he loses interest and charm in aesthetics and boredom and despair kisses his feet and individual falls into the web of depression .The life gets aggravated by monotonous things as every thing turns out to be the same and finally an aesthetic individual falls into total despair and becomes a skeptical in faith and approach of life.The individual now speculates to live life of Morality, he begins to take interest in social issues. As moral life is guided and regulated by moral code and strict principles ,the principles being subjective in nature are not purely implemented in real life situations , this triggers boredom and unrest in individual and he feels alienated and social ostracisation. Thus despair and boredom again kisses his feet and he again falls into the web of despair .
Thereafter, man switches over to religion. As religion is to have faith in God , a thing of non objectivity, abstraction, and infinity, here faith in God and religion cushions and buffers individual from swepting away in the ocean of boredom and despair. This stage according to Soren Kierkigaard is the stage of fulfillment, as God is beyond logic, beyond proof , beyond objectivity, and beyond reason. It is these parametres which keeps an individual following religion and living the life in the hope of God. Thus, Soren Kirkigaards philosophy rests on the bedrock of choice of an individual ,and these choices shape and give meaning to ones life. This is main tenets of existentialism as choice is in hands of an individual ,and it is this freedom of choice which gives meaning to ones life. Though at times ones choice is governed by external influences but whether to succumb and surrender to these influences like social ,family or other pressure still is subject to choice .The kernel of Kierkegaard’s philosophy is freedom of choice and responsibility of an individual to live a meaningful life than to curse the society or religion as choice and decision is the sole responsibility of an individual and lies in his utter control and regulation ,whether to live a life of despair , and uncertainty or an authentic and meaningful life.
