I have learned people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will not forget how you made them feel- Maya Angelou.
At its core, Morality is not something merely about obeying social rules but it is about choosing compassion when we have the opportunity to judge. In the same manner, Ethics remind us that our actions towards others should be guided by responsibility, empathy and respect for human dignity.
Working on a rolling basis, moving around daily and busy with every day stuff. Yet, one day you here that the person you met yesterday who looked normal is no more and you are in awe of shock how is it possible? A complete disbelief! Ethically, this reminds us that the outward appearances rarely reveal inner realities. A morally responsible individual therefore refrains from making quick judgements, recognizing that every person carries struggles invisible to others.
Life is a journey which is full of ups and downs, sometimes hap pious and sometimes harsh. Yet, people are chasing dreams, acquiring opportunities, aspiring more and surpassing the responsibilities.
You might meet a person on regular basis. He appears normal and a happy go lucky person. But, you don’t the hindrances and harsh realities of his life. That is why the acts of kindness are not merely gestures of courtesy; they are moral choices. Ethics teaches that even small expression of empathy can affirm another person’s dignity and lessen their emotional burden. Therefore, it’s better to be a reason of smile on other’s face.
From both ethical and moral perspectives, judging others without understanding their circumstances reflects a failure of empath. As Aristotle’s virtue ethics suggests that compassion and kindness are virtues cultivated through habit, while Kant reminds us that every individual deserves to be treated as an end in themselves, never merely a means.
Be Generous! Be Gentle! Be Gracious! Be Genial! As one doesn’t know what life brings next and neither seek validation and nor the comfort of passing a judgement; the other side of story often remains unseen. Perhaps the greatest measure of morality is not how loudly we speak about kindness, but how consistently we practice it when no one is watching. Ethics, therefore begins with understanding that every life carries a story that we may never fully know as Roy T. Bennett says that be the reason that someone smiles and be the reason someone feels loved and believes in the goodness of people.
