
The Department of Law, University of Kashmir (KU), in collaboration with the Department of Legal Metrology, Kashmir Division, J&K, organised a Mega Awareness Programme on Legal Metrology, GST revisions, and Consumer Protection at the Main Campus. The initiative aimed to enhance understanding of legal standards, inform traders about GST 2.0 reforms, and empower consumers to seek redressal through informed legal awareness.
The day-long event included interactive sessions, expert lectures, and open discussions with officers from the Department of Legal Metrology, GST experts, legal professionals, and academicians. Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, highlighted that such programmes bridge academics with public policy, stating, “Awareness on legal metrology, GST reforms, and consumer protection strengthens civic responsibility and empowers citizens to make informed economic choices.”
Mr. Saurabh Bhagat (IAS), Commissioner/Secretary, Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, emphasized the importance of understanding consumer rights and market regulations to ensure transparency and accountability in an evolving marketplace. Registrar KU, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, underscored the role of academic institutions in connecting policy with public understanding.
Mr. Owais Ahmad, Director FCS&CA Kashmir, discussed challenges in the digital economy, including online payments, e-commerce transactions, and consumer grievance mechanisms. Mr. Rajinder Singh Tara, Controller of Legal Metrology, and Mr. Shabir Ahmad Mir, Assistant Controller, explained the department’s regulatory functions and key provisions of the Legal Metrology Act in implementing GST reforms.
Prof. Shahnaz, Dean and Head of KU’s School of Law, highlighted the importance of legal literacy in promoting responsible business practices. The proceedings were conducted by Dr. Yasir Abbas, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Tanweer Ahmad, Joint Controller, Legal Metrology.
The programme saw participation from university officials, deans, faculty members, law students, consumer affairs experts, members of the state and district consumer disputes redressal commissions, and representatives from trade and commerce, fostering dialogue on compliance, rights, and responsibilities in the market.
