
To observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), the Department of Social Work at the University of Kashmir (KU), in collaboration with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies on Aging (CISA) and Moul Mouj Foundation (MMF), Srinagar, held a day-long programme at the KU main campus on Monday.
The event aimed to raise awareness about elder abuse and promote the dignity and rights of older adults. It was attended by faculty, scholars, and students.
In her message, KU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan emphasized the moral and cultural responsibility to care for elders, calling them “the moral anchors of our society.” Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal urged academic institutions to lead youth awareness efforts on elder care.
Prof. Aneesa Shafi, Dean, School of Social Sciences, stressed the need to sensitize youth to changing social dynamics, while Prof. Masooda Yaseen of MMF advocated for practical, community-based solutions. Prof. Syeda Afshana highlighted the growing communication gap between generations and called for meaningful intergenerational engagement.
Earlier, Prof. Shazia Manzoor, Head of Social Work, KU, welcomed participants and reiterated the department's commitment to socially relevant issues.
The programme concluded with a pledge to uphold elder rights and promote a compassionate, age-inclusive society. Dr. Shakeel ur Rehman, MMF Secretary General, delivered the vote of thanks.
