Traffic on Kupwara to border town of Keran was restored on Monday after remaining closed for five days due to accumulation of snow and slippery road conditions.
However, border towns of Karnah and Machil besides dozens of other far flung and remote villages, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) in the frontier district of Kupwara remained cut off for the sixth day on Monday due to accumulation of snow and slippery road conditions, an official of Police Control Room (PCR), Kupwara said over phone.
The border town of Gurez, surrounded by Pakistan administered Kashmir (PaK) from three sides, also remained cut off from district headquarter Bandipora due to several feet of snow at Razdan pass.
He said there was about two feet to five feet of fresh snowfall last week forcing authorities to suspend traffic on dozens of roads leading to far flung and remote villages, including those near LoC.
The district authorities immediately put into service sophisticated machines and men to clear the snow, he said adding snow clearance operation was completed on Kupwara-Keran road last evening. We allowed traffic this morning following further improvement in the weather though the road was still slippery at some places and drivers have been asked to drive very carefully to avoid any accident.
He said snow clearance operation on Kupwara-Machil and Kupwara-Karnah roads was going on war footing from both sides to restore traffic on these roads. Snow clearance operation was also going on to connect dozens of far flung and remote villages with district and tehsil headquarters.
Meanwhile, the Bandipora to Gurez and several other border border areas also remained closed due to fresh snowfall at Razdan pass for the sixth day today. These roads were recently reopened after remaining closed since November 6 due to heavy snowfall.
