KU’s Geography Department holds alumni meet

To celebrate the achievements and strengthen the bond with its former students, the Department of Geography and Disaster Management, University of Kashmir (KU), organised an Alumni Meet at the varsity.

The event provided a platform for alumni across different batches to reconnect, share experiences, and reflect on their academic journey. It also aimed to develop long-term engagement between the department and its alumni for future collaborations in academics, research, and mentorship.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, lauded the department for nurturing academic excellence and developing long-lasting relationships with its alumni.

“Our alumni are our pride. They carry forward the university’s values and serve as role models for our current students,” she said.

Dean, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences KU, Prof. Gh. Jeelani, in his address, said that alumni reflect a department’s legacy and are vital partners in its progress.

“Their journey mirrors our success, and their involvement is essential for future academic growth,” he said.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Head, Department of Geography and Disaster Management KU, Prof. Pervez Ahmed, spoke about the department’s journey and its contributions to research in geography and disaster risk management. He also shared that the department will host the 37th Annual Conference of the Indian Institute of Geomorphologists (IGI) in August 2025.

The event featured alumni from the department’s first batch of 1981. Notable people present on the occasion included Prof. Mehraj-ud-din, former Head, Geography, SP College; Mr. Farooq Ahmad Wani, Chief Editor, Brighter Kashmir; senior police officials- Mr. Ali Mohammad Reshi and Mr. Gh. Ahmad Rather; Mr. Mushtaq Ali Ahmad Khan, renowned theatre professional and film maker, Mr. Syed Humayun Qasir, former Director, All India Radio Srinagar, among others.

The meet included interactive sessions, cultural performances by Pashmina Band, and discussions on alumni engagement and mentorship. The event proceedings were conducted by Dr. Javeed Ahmad Rather, faculty, Department of Geography and Disaster Management KU, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Mohammad Shafi Bhat, faculty, Department of Geography and Disaster Management KU.
