Lal Chowk to glow with 20,000 lamps on Diwali

October 21, 2025 | Taha Wani

In a dazzling celebration of light, faith, and harmony, around 20,000 earthen lamps will illuminate Lal Chowk this Diwali, turning the heart of Srinagar into a radiant spectacle of joy and togetherness.

On Sunday evening, devotees and locals gathered near the iconic Ghanta Ghar to mark the beginning of the festival. Rows of glowing diyas symbolized the triumph of light over darkness, radiating warmth and positivity across the square. The air was filled with devotional songs, laughter, and the fragrance of incense, creating a truly festive atmosphere.
Organizers said this year’s large-scale celebration aims to highlight the spirit of communal harmony and cultural unity that defines Kashmir. “Lighting 20,000 diyas at Lal Chowk is more than a visual delight—it’s a message of peace, coexistence, and shared happiness,” said one of the event volunteers. “We want to show that festivals belong to everyone, and they have the power to bring people closer.”
Several devotees who spoke to Brighter Kashmir expressed their excitement, calling it a “dream come true.” “Celebrating Diwali at Lal Chowk feels surreal,” said Ramesh Kumar, a devotee who travelled from Jammu. “Seeing thousands of diyas glowing together in the heart of Srinagar gives us a sense of belonging and unity.”
Local residents, too, joined the festivities with enthusiasm, lighting lamps, sharing sweets, and capturing the enchanting scenes on their phones. Many believe the grand display will not only strengthen community bonds but also draw tourists from across India to witness Kashmir’s festive charm.
Authorities have made special arrangements for security and traffic regulation to ensure the celebrations proceed smoothly. With the clock tower bathed in golden light, Lal Chowk is set to become a symbol of peace, faith, and togetherness this Diwali night—showcasing Kashmir’s enduring spirit of unity through the glow of 20,000 diyas.
