In the words of Professor Shafi Shouq, Lalla Dyad is a woman of the extraordinary genius, visionary and profound mystic of fourteenth-century Kashmir. Yeah, she is rightly considered the founder of Kashmiri poetry. She is the woman held in high esteem and reverence in the plural society of Kashmir. Muslims of the Kashmiri plural society call her Lalla-Aarifa, the Enlightened Lalla or the Lalla Dyad who knows the Truth (God).

How passionately and with profound respect, one of the greatly esteemed saint, and son of the Kashmiri soil, Shaikh Noor-ud-Din, famously known as Nund Rishi, is paying his tribute to our Lallashvari or Lalla Aarifa:
“ Tas Padmaan Pooryichyi Lalyey
Tamyi galyi galyi galyey amryath chyov,
swa seeny avatar lwalyey
tyithyi var mya dyitam dyioo!”
[That Lalla of the village of the lotuses
Savoured elixir of life to her full
She, our saint, bore God in her bosom
O God! Endow me with such merits.]
This woman, whom we call Lalla Dyad or Lalla Aarifa by love and respect, is being given a tribute by Shams Faqir, one more renowned and great saint of our soil Kashmir:
“Lalyi kor yikivaTi aakash praanas
Zaan milinaav bhagvaana siity.”
[ As Lalla combined her soul with the skies,
Keep your knowledge focused on God.]
Palyi tami kor zagitas tarri tarnas
Kali tamyi tsoTnay nafsyi shaitaanas
Zaan milinaav bhagvaana siity”.
[Lalla ran to the river for a bath
She knew how to cross the river of life
She slew the devil sleeping in her Self
Keep your knowledge focused on God.]
Our Lalla Aarifa (Lalla Mouj) preaches religious kinship as that it is unwisely to discriminate between the people as Hindu and Musalman. There is one God who likes one sun and is always with us. It is He alone who creates us, feeds us and gives us death. In His Eyes, there is no one as Hindu and Musalman, or Sikh or someone else. We are all His bondsmen and bondswomen. What is of utmost importance is the knowledge of self. And this knowledge of self is the knowledge of the Almighty. She Says:
Shiva (God) is always with you like the sun
Do not discriminate between a Hindu and Musalman
If wise, try to know yourself
That alone is your knowledge of the Almighty.
in the following Vakh, our Lalla Mouj preaches us universal kinship and brotherhood are
“The sun warms up every particle of the world
Not selecting any sacred land
The water god does not dwell in other’s house.”
In the world is one sun for all. Does this sun make a difference between an American White and African Black? Does this sun discriminate between a Jew, a Christian, a Muslim or a Hindu? Is there any instance proving that rain only loves to descend on the houses of Hindus? Or does it refute to come down on the fields of Muslims? Thus as sun and water do not discriminate between us, we humans should not make divisions among ourselves.
Being indirect in the following Vakh, our Lalla Mouj wants us not to follow the falsehood. The falsehood, in her eye, is the fight over religion and the discrimination of Hindus and Muslims.
“O, my soul! Why are you so engrossed in the untruth?
Why do you accept the illusion as the truth?”
In Lalla Aarifa’s insight, the greed for power, wealth, name and fame has drowned men. It is greed which has given birth to all chaos.
“Alas! drowned you are in the ocean of greed,
You dismantled the bank and got blinded under the slough.”
Our Lalla Mouj laments over the greed that has marred our potentiality that would help us find the truth.
“I lament your condition, oh man!
Greed has occupied the mind
Always engrossed in worldly care
You ignore the ultimate truth!”
Reflecting on monsters that cause individuals and nations to fall, our Saint Lalla Dyad says:
Slay monsters of evil: lust, anger, and greed
Before they slay you with their deadly darts
Feed your mind with the silent meditation
Know the meaning of these forces.”
