History bears testimony to the fact that the first prominent preacher of Islam in Kashmir was Hazrat Sharfuddin Abdul Rehman Bulbul Shah (RA), who belonged to the Suhrawardiya order of Sufism. Following Bulbul Shah (RA), the sacred mission of spreading Islam in the valley was further advanced by Hazrat Mir Syed Ali Hamdani (RA), popularly revered as Shah-i-Hamdan, along with nearly seven hundred disciples and associates who accompanied him to Kashmir.Their contribution extended far beyond religious preaching. They not only acquainted the people with the teachings and practical principles of Islam but also guided them towards social, moral, and economic upliftment. The arrival of Mir Syed Ali Hamdani (RA) is regarded as one of the most significant events in the history of Kashmir, as his presence ushered in transformative reforms in the lives of the people.Through his teachings and exemplary conduct, he strengthened religious belief, refined moral character, and established a systematic foundation for the propagation of Islam in the valley. Social evils such as ignorance, superstition, black magic, and the inhumane practice of Sati gradually diminished under the influence of his reformative movement. In addition to his spiritual mission, Shah-i-Hamdan (RA) played a pivotal role in the economic development of Kashmir. He introduced the people to the systems of trade and commerce prevalent in Central Asia, thereby stimulating economic growth and prosperity. Furthermore, he contributed significantly to the advancement of agriculture, irrigation, and industry by encouraging the adoption of improved techniques and practices. The flourishing of arts and crafts in Kashmir is also widely attributed to Amir-i-Kabir Mir Syed Ali Hamdani (RA). By fostering cultural and intellectual interaction between Kashmir and Persia, he laid the foundation for a remarkable artistic renaissance in the valley. Accompanying him were numerous disciples skilled in various crafts such as calligraphy, painting, shawl weaving, woodwork, and other traditional arts, which subsequently became integral to Kashmir’s cultural identity. The philosopher-poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal (RA) also acknowledged the immense contribution of Shah-i-Hamdan (RA), observing that his influence transformed Kashmir into “Mini-Iran” through the development of its magnificent arts and crafts, thereby bringing prosperity and cultural refinement to the region.Speaking about the vision and mission of Mir Syed Ali Hamdani (RA), the renowned scholar Professor H. N. Rafiabadi stated during an international seminar at the University of Kashmir:“There were two things which Mir Saiyid Ali Hamadani (RA) wanted to flourish in Kashmir: Wahadat — the Unity of God Saadat — leading one’s life towards salvation.”

Mir Syed Ali Hamdani (RA) was not merely a spiritual leader but also a distinguished social reformer and intellectual. He emphasized the principles of justice, communal harmony, universal brotherhood, honesty, and equality in social and administrative life. These ideals are profoundly reflected in his literary works and teachings.
The eminent Islamic scholar Hazrat Shah Waliullah Muhaddith Dehlvi (RA) also recognized his contributions by authoring Tuhfat-ul-Ameer in honor of Amir-i-Kabir Mir Syed Ali Hamdani (RA).Approximately 172 books and treatises are attributed to him, many of which are preserved in renowned libraries around the world. Among his most notable works are Zakhirat-ul-Muluk and Mawaddat-ul-Qurba. Zakhirat-ul-Muluk elaborates upon political philosophy, the responsibilities of rulers, and the duties of citizens within a just society. He also authored several important works on spirituality and devotion. Awrad-e-Fathiya, one of his most celebrated compilations, consists of prayers and supplications that continue to be recited after Fajr prayers in many Hanafi communities. Another significant literary contribution of Shah-i-Hamdan (RA) is Chihil Asrar (“Forty Secrets”).Hazrat Shah-i-Hamdan (RA) strongly emphasized the importance of earning a lawful livelihood and discouraged dependence on charity among Sufis. He himself earned through cap-making, thereby setting an example of dignity and self-reliance.A great traveler of his era, he journeyed extensively across different regions of the world in pursuit of knowledge and in the service of Islam. Although many saints visited Kashmir for the propagation of Islam, Amir-i-Kabir Mir Syed Ali Hamdani (RA) occupies a unique position for firmly establishing the message of monotheism and Islamic values in the valley. He also introduced Central Asian architectural styles to Kashmir, resulting in a distinctive architectural tradition. The historic Khanqah-e-Mualla stands as a remarkable example of this enduring legacy.
In addition, he encouraged environmental preservation through plantation initiatives. A Chinar tree located in Chatargam, Chadoora, in the Budgam district of Kashmir, believed to be over 627 years old, is traditionally said to have been planted by him in 1374 CE.
After illuminating Kashmir with spiritual wisdom, social reform, and cultural advancement, Mir Syed Ali Hamdani (RA) passed away in 786 AH / 1384 CE in Hazara (Pakhli). His mortal remains were later laid to rest in Kulob, Tajikistan. His annual Urs is commemorated on the 6th of Dhu al-Hijjah each year in recognition of his unparalleled services to Islam and humanity.Indeed, the life and contributions of this extraordinary saint cannot be fully encompassed within a single article. However, reflecting upon his legacy on such occasions allows us to remember and appreciate his enduring influence on the spiritual, cultural, and socio-economic fabric of Kashmir.
