Lessons from Little Sobia and Ayasha

July 16, 2025 | Muntashir Kifayat

It was early in the morning for yet another academic visit in the out pocket of zone Narabal (Budgam) and yet another lesson learnt.

It is the story of two beautiful kids approximately below 4 in the pre-primary class.
Ayasha and Sobia looking twins, though of different areas. As an academic monitor when I stepped in the pre-primary class of this middle school. The kids stood up and shouted a loud _ Good morning sir!!!
Two beautiful girls Sobia and Ayasha came to me hurriedly, with smiling faces shaking hands with me.
I asked the one. What is your name ? She replied, Sobia. I said, "tell me the spelling of the word Sobia. She replied N_E_Z Sobia without an iota of fear. The other one spelt her name correctly.
A teacher started taunting Sobia about the wrong spelling. I stopped the teacher.
Sobia gazed at me with yet another smile. Her boldness at the age of almost 3 and a half impressed the monitoring team.
Sobia and Ayasha were in their own world. They moved to another corner of the room and started singing with claps. "Ek Mota Hathi Goom nai Chala
Barish Kai Mausam Mai Ja Kai Woh Fassa"
A big elephant went for a walk.
He was trapped in a train.
We too started singing with them. Sobia started punching me like my own daughter does.
We went to the school office. Where my friend, the academic monitor praised the boldness of the students in the pre-primary class. The happy atmosphere will help them to attend the school regularly.
My friend continued :
Never rush these kids. Bold children often exhibit increased self esteem, improved communication skills and enhanced resilience.
When they stand up, like Sobia does, even in challenging situations there self belief and confidence boosts.
Psychologically this leads to positive self image and a greater willingness to take on new challenges. Children like Sobia and Ayasha often have well developed communication skills. They express their needs and opinions clearly.
The pre-primary stage is the bed-rock of development. Facing challenges head on and not backing down can foster and resilience in children.
They assert themselves in group settings and develop a clearer sense of their own identity, values and beliefs. Bold children often think critically, explore different options, and find creative solutions. My friend continued.
In the majority of schools it is often seen that a teacher makes students of pre-primary classes quite by threatening them. The moment the teacher does this, he kills the very essence of grooming and nurturing them.
My friend, academic monitor came up with some ways for managing pre-primary classes:
A pre-primary kid loves learning. A break is needed from time to time. Adding fun breaks will help like playing games, singing a song. These fun breaks refresh the student.
Give reward to a kid for positive behavior. This positive reinforcement helps in making a kid behave positively.
Provide the kids with a space or activities to help them calm down. This helps when students are feeling angry or upset.
Avoid having kids spend too much time doing one activity. They become bored or distracted.
Never ever taunt a kid if he commits a mistake in reading. Never make fun of mistakes. If you do remember you are psychologically killing them.
Allow students to express themselves.
Every kid is different. Adjust your approach as a teacher.
Teach recognising. Organizing and expressing thoughts clearly.
Children learn at different paces, be patient and positive.
My friend, academic monitor continues by stressing that all the educators at pre-primary classes should be catious enough in handling these kids.
The pre-primary class is a bed-rock of development. The pre-primary class is the cornerstone of human development, laying the foundation for mature, responsible adults. Research shows that significant physics, cognitive and emotional development occurs before the age of 5.The need of the hour is to have the best in the business to bring out the best in these young minds. A pre-primary teacher training is pivotal.
We need competitive resource persons for imparting pre primary teacher training to the educators. Dedicated and trained pre primary teachers are vital for maximizing the output. The officers at zonal level, Diets and SCERTs have to take the responsibility of imparting effective pre primary teacher training to make this bed rock stronger. My friend concluded
We left the school. I called Sobia and Ayesha. Took them in my lap and clicked a photograph. Sobia promised to learn the spelling of her name next time with a magical smile on her face.
