Let Us not Snatch Childhood of our Children

April 22, 2025 | Syed Mohsin Attiq

The contemporary world order is ingrained in competitive race in every aspect of life. From academics to sports, competition has become talk of the town. The unending race of competition is indeed a great driving force towards growth, prosperity & development of nation-states. Having said that this competition has equally posed grave danger in its various manifestations. The competition in our academics is snatching childhood of our little souls. A reasonable section of masses can have difference of opinion vis a vis my perspective, but I have personally observed it as a parent. Our children need a pragmatic alternative full of recreation & fun in order to act as stress boosters. The policy makers in our education system need to reform our education policy in tone with contemporary realities of our society.

Firstly let us unearth the undercurrent & reasons, why do i believe that we are snatching childhood of our wards. Before I will throw light on it, let us remind & refresh our memories with our own childhood experiences. Our childhood was full of recreational activities round the year. We used to enjoy our studies without any stress & boredom. We used to play sports even during examination days. Our parents had also reconciled with those realities. Now compare your childhood with that of your own children & decide for yourself that how much horrible environment has been created for them. I am no way advocating that we should give free hand to our children to escape from their prime academic activities in this competitive world. We have to make our children accountable but not at the cost of their childhood. When our children return from their educational institutions, they should be treated like dignified guests. Parents need to give them warm welcome full of love & care. Because our love & care are only credible indicators remaining in their childhood. They have not the privilege to enjoy on & off with their friends in this world of competition & showoff. They are caught in quagmire of unending academic stress without any break. Their academic journey has become matter of pride for their parents & relatives. Their slightest academic mistake can cost dignity of their loved ones. We as parents should spare atleast our holidays for their recreation & enjoyment. Let us take them for outing on holidays & release their stress by listening to their inner emotions & feelings. Let us become their companions in order to ensure their stressless life. Most of the times children revolt against us because we never give them an opportunity to express themselves. They need expression & vent to their feelings & aspirations. We can not afford to plug their mouth with our ego & arrogance.
Secondly the policy makers of education system also need to devise a pragmatic response to emerging realities of contemporary times. The academic calenders should incorporate a comprehensive dose of recreation for our blooming buds. The academic activities in our educational institutions should become centre of attraction for our little kids. The physical education is indeed part of our curriculum, but it needs a robust overhaul. Physical education should not become a cosmetic exercise. The policy machinery of our education system are in fact doing wonderful job in this age of competition. We do have policy makers, who are men of calibre. They can definitely ignite a revolution in our academic sector. But they need to be given feedback about ground realities at appropriate forums & relevant platforms. At the same time, it is the bounden responsibility of our policy makers to reform our education policy in order to make it more pragmatic & realistic. The academic calender of our children should incorporate reasonable time for their recreation & fun. Special recreational days should be arranged for our children, who are under tremendous academic stress.
Last but not the least, academic competition is welcome but in a recreational tone & taste especially for our children.
