Let's Make a Resolution to Develop Punjab

January 04, 2025 | Iqbal Singh Lalpura

Punjab, the land of the Gurus, has been grappling with various challenges since Partition. The state, known for its rich cultural heritage and agricultural prowess, has been stuck in a cycle of agitations, disrupting its economy and hindering growth. It's time for Punjab to shift its focus from agitation to development.

Punjab's history is marked by significant agitations, including the Akali Agitation (1950-1966) for a Punjabi Suba, Naxalism in the late 1960s, terrorism in the 1980s and 1990s, and the ongoing farmers' agitation. These movements have resulted in loss of life, displacement of people, and economic instability. The demand for Khalistan has also been criticized for being an unrealistic goal, with some arguing that it has become an "industry" for seeking political asylum abroad. Overall, the result is loss of life and property in Punjab. Instead of becoming a prosperous state, it has become a police state for over 40 years. The sale of illicit drugs has become an industry, with allegations that it is ongoing with the patronage and involvement of those who are expected to control it.
The state's farmers have been at the forefront of agitations for decades, demanding better prices, subsidies, and policies. While these protests have brought attention to the plight of farmers, they have also disrupted the state's economy. To truly develop and prosper, Punjab needs a comprehensive development plan.

Key areas for attention are
Peace and communal harmony, for which every Punjabi needs to contribute. The elected government needs to provide justice instead of blaming predecessors.

Agricultural Diversification

Punjab's agriculture sector needs to diversify beyond wheat and paddy. The state should invest in research and development to promote alternative crops, such as fruits, vegetables, and pulses.
- Industrial growth: Punjab needs to attract industries that can provide employment opportunities to its youth. The state should focus on developing infrastructure, such as roads, highways, and logistics hubs, to support industrial growth.

Infrastructure Development

Punjab's infrastructure, including roads, highways, and public transportation, needs a major overhaul. The state should invest in upgrading its infrastructure to support economic growth and improve citizens' quality of life.

Education and Skill Development

Punjab's youth need access to quality education and skill development programs. The state should invest in upgrading its educational institutions and providing training programs that can help youth acquire skills relevant to the modern economy.

Healthcare and Social Welfare

Punjab needs to improve its healthcare services and social welfare programs. The state should invest in upgrading its healthcare infrastructure and providing social welfare programs to support the needy and vulnerable sections of society.
Continuous agitations and confrontation with the central government have spoiled Punjab's chances of progress. Instead of blaming the central government, the state government must consult with them for guidance and help. Agriculture should be considered an industry, with more emphasis on modern technology and avenues in vegetable, milk, and meat demand. Food processing is another avenue for growth.
To achieve its development goals, Punjab needs a comprehensive development plan that involves all stakeholders, including the government, industry, academia, and civil society. The plan should be based on a thorough analysis of the state's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
As we step into the new year, let us resolve to develop Punjab. Let us work together to create a prosperous and developed state, where every citizen has access to quality education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. Let us make Punjab a model state for development and good governance.
In the words of Guru Nanak, "Nanak naam chadhi kala! Tere bhane Sarbat da Bhala." Let us live life in high spirits and wish happiness for all. Let us work together to create a brighter future for Punjab and its people.
