Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
In a post on X, PMO India said, “Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Shri @manojsinha, met Prime Minister @narendramodi.”
The meeting came amidst heightened administrative and security focus in Jammu and Kashmir and the ongoing Amarnath yatra.
Though details about what transpired during the meeting between PM Modi and Lt Sinha Governor is not known but sources suggested that the talks likely centered on the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir including security challenges, developmental projects and the ongoing Amarnath yatra.
LG Sinha met PM Modi a day after he asserted that J&K’s statehood would be restored at an appropriate time as has been promised by the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The meeting assumes significance in backdrop of the recent developments that have taken place after the April 22, Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 civilians dead.
Sinha, who assumed office as the second Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir on August 7, 2020, following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, has overseen a period of significant change in the region. His tenure has been marked by efforts to restore peace, bolster security, and drive economic and infrastructural development under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi.
Sinha’s administration has been credited with transformative strides, including a doubling of the UT’s economy, a tourism boom with 2.38 crore visitors last year, and significant infrastructure upgrades that have reduced travel time between Jammu and Srinagar from 8-9 hours to just 4.5 hours.
The meeting’s proximity to the upcoming Monsoon session of Parliament, starting July 21, 2025, has also raised questions about whether discussions on Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood or administrative leadership were on the agenda.
The meeting with PM Modi comes amid ongoing political debates in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly around the dual power structure between the Lieutenant Governor and the elected government.
Sinha has clarified that roles are clearly defined under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, with the elected government holding developmental portfolios.
