Life: A Precious Gift to Revere

Gift is not what others offer to us or what we offer to others in appreciation and acknowledgement of our or their contribution in various spheres of life

February 25, 2026 | Hasnain Aaqib

Renowned Urdu poet Pandit Brij Narayan Chakbast defines life in the following words:
Zindagi kya hai? Anasir mein Zahur e tarteeb
Maut kya hai? Inhi ajza ka pireshan hona.

(What is life? It is nothing but the appearance of elements in a systematic sequence. And what is life? Dispersion of these same elements.)
This appears to be one of the best and most appropriately expressed meanings in a poetic form. Even Khan Hasnain Aaqib penned a couplet:
Zindagi apne liye jaise izafi ungli
Zindagi tujh ko azeez aise, Mahajan ko sood.
(For me, life is an extra (sixth) finger which is mostly of no use and looks ugly. And the same life for you is as dear and essential as interest is to the moneylender.) This is the innovative simile used by the poet.
Be it whatsoever.
Life is a tree which shades its leaves when the autumn arrives all of a sudden. But before it approaches, there is a series of moments which need to be stored as something more precious than losing it.
Life isn’t a recurring event. It follows the simple formula of once and for all. This is what makes it the most precious element deserving respect and reverence. Each moment of life is to be revered. Albert Einstein once said:
There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.
Let everything in our life be as preciously welcomed and revered as a miracle.
Life is a Gift
And the value of every gift is evaluated irrespective of its material value and cost.
Gift is not what others offer to us or what we offer to others in appreciation and acknowledgement of our or their contribution in various spheres of life.
Life itself is a gift.
Each and every string of breath is a gift.
Ask the value of this gift to those who are compelled to carry an oxygen cylinder for their extended life. Life is one of the greatest gifts bestowed upon humanity. From the moment of birth, each individual is given a unique opportunity to experience the world, to learn, to love, and to grow. Unlike material possessions, life cannot be replaced or reclaimed once lost. For this reason, it must be revered, protected, and lived with purpose and gratitude.
Who wouldn’t know Ralph Waldo Emerson? The same Emerson is the one who said:
‘Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.’
So don’t submit to what other cough out before you. Submit to your own sense. Revere life.
Revering life begins with recognizing its value. Every breath, every moment and every experience contributes to the richness of human existence. Even challenges and hardships carry meaning, as they shape character and build resilience. When people view life as a precious gift rather than a burden, they develop a deeper appreciation for both joyful and difficult moments. This perspective encourages patience, hope and perseverance in times of struggle.
Respect for life also extends beyond oneself to others and the environment. Valuing life means treating others with kindness, compassion and dignity, regardless of differences. Acts of empathy and understanding affirm the worth of human existence.
Similarly, caring for nature reflects reverence for life, as the environment sustains all living beings. By protecting the world around us, we honor the interconnectedness of life.
Lao Tzu says: ‘What the caterpillar calls the end, the rest of the world calls a butterfly.’
Let your own self decide whether to call it the end or a butterfly.
Furthermore, revering life involves living responsibly and purposefully. Making wise choices, nurturing one’s physical and mental well-being, and striving to contribute positively to society are ways of showing respect for the gift of life. Each individual has the ability to leave a meaningful impact, whether through small acts of kindness or significant achievements. Living with intention transforms life from mere existence into a meaningful journey.
Life is a gift that deserves deep respect and appreciation. To revere life is to cherish every moment, to care for others and to live with purpose and responsibility. When individuals recognize the true value of life, they are inspired to protect it, nurture it and make it a source of hope and goodness not only for themselves alone but for the whole world as well.
