The death toll in the recent flare-up along the Line of Control in Poonch district touched seven on Tuesday with a Pakistani villager and three Pakistani soldiers killed in firing on Tuesday. A minor girl and a woman, both residents of Poonch, and a middle-rung officer of the BSF were killed on Monday.

The violence spread to Rajouri district on Tuesday where the armies of India and Pakistan exchanged heavy fire and shelling along the Line of Control (LoC). An army spokesman said Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation at about 11:30 AM by shelling with artillery, mortars and firing of small arms along LoC in Nowshera sector.
“Indian army is retaliating effectively,” he said.Pakistan on Tuesday accused Indian forces of killing a 70-year-old Pakistani villager in Niaza Per. Pakistani officials said Indian troops targeted its military positions overnight in the border town of Rakhchakri in Pakistani-administered Kashmir. “Three soldiers were killed and another was wounded,” the Pak army said in a statement, adding that Pakistani soldiers “responded effectively.”
On this side of the border, the army accused Pakistani troops of firing mortars and small-arms fire on Monday along the disputed border, in Poonch. It said Indian soldiers retaliated.
Officials said Pakistani troops attacked residential areas which resulted in injuries to four civilians including two girls in Shahpur sector.
“The injured were identified as Mohammad Rashid son of Mohammad Sadiq of Banwat Shahpur, Mohammad Shareef son of Mohammad Hussain, Nafeeza Akthar (17) daughter Mohammad Maroof and Zareena Akther (44) wife of Muzaffar Hussain, residents of Pojra Bandi Chichyan. The injured were taken to district hospital Poonch for treatment,” GNS reported.
A senior police officer said an BSP officer, a woman and a girl were killed while at least 18 civilians and five troops were wounded. The cross border firing resumed on Tuesday morning, after a brief lull, he said.
Days after the Feb. 14 suicide attack in Kashmir, New Delhi launched an airstrike inside Pakistan, targeting militants from the Jaish-e-Mohammed militant group which had claimed responsibility for the bombing.
Pakistan retaliated and said it shot down two Indian air force planes; one Indian pilot was captured and later released and handed back to India amid signs of easing tensions. Pakistan said Washington, Moscow, Beijing and Riyadh helped avert all-out fighting but tensions remained. Islamabad later claimed no Pakistani was linked to the attack and that Jaish-e-Mohammed had no training camps inside Pakistan.
The fatalities due to violence on the LoC and working border were some of the highest since tensions flared between the rival nuclear-armed nations after Pulwama attack.
Meanwhile, authorities suspended cross LoC trade from Chakan Da Bagh following fresh escalation in tension on Line of Control. As fresh exchange of cross border firing took place in Poonch sector on Tuesday morning, authorities decided to suspend the trade for security reasons.
“Around three dozen of trucks loaded with goods were set to be exported to PaK but the same were called back from immigration center,” officials said.
