Losing a Generation: The Silent Cry of J&K’s Youth

April 24, 2026 | Dar Muqeet Gull/ Mukadas -Mohi -ud -Din

We are slowly turning our children into mere “mark-producing machines,” where a small drop in scores—from 500 to 300 ,feels like a fall from success to failure. The constant pressure, harsh comparisons, and the fear of “what will people say” become unbearable. Instead of understanding a child’s struggles, society quickly labels them as a “failure” or worse. This lack of empathy pushes many young minds into isolation, hopelessness, and sometimes into the dangerous world of addiction.

A silent killer is spreading through our streets, quietly destroying the future of our youth. According to recent observations, a significant number of young people many between the ages of 10 and 17 are falling into substance abuse. These are not just statistics; they represent broken dreams, shattered families, and lost potential.
Many parents provide their children everything; comfort, money, and luxury, but often fail to give them the most important thing: their time and attention. Love without guidance and trust without awareness can become dangerous. When children are given money without understanding their needs or struggles, it may unknowingly become a path toward destruction.
By the time parents notice warning signs, such as mood swings, red eyes, isolation, or small thefts at home ,it is often too late. The child may already be trapped in addiction, spending thousands every month. This is not because parents are bad, but because a lack of communication and awareness creates space for such issues to grow.
At the same time, a serious question must be asked to those who sell these harmful substances: Do you not have children of your own? For the sake of money, they are not just selling drugs, they are destroying lives, crushing parents’ hopes, and setting fire to the future of innocent children. What they ignite in someone else’s home today may one day reach their own doorstep.
Society, too, plays a role. Instead of supporting struggling children, we often judge them. Instead of listening, we criticize. Instead of helping, we isolate. This pushes children further into darkness.
It is time for change. Our children do not need more money or material things ,they need our presence, our understanding, and our support. Parents must communicate openly, listen without judgment, and guide with patience. Schools and society must focus not only on marks but on mental well-being and character. If we do not listen to the silent cries of our children today, tomorrow we will be left with nothing but regret.
Let us act now, before it is too late.
