
Srinagar, April 30: Lieutenant General Balbir Singh has been appointed as the new General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Chinar Corps, one of the Indian Army’s key formations responsible for operations in Jammu and Kashmir. He will assume charge on May 1, 2026.
Lt Gen Singh brings extensive operational experience, particularly in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations in the Kashmir Valley. His previous roles include serving as Major General General Staff (MGGS) in the Northern Command, and holding command positions in the Rashtriya Rifles, including the elite Victor Force in South Kashmir and 1 Sector RR.
Headquartered in Srinagar, the Chinar Corps plays a crucial role in securing the Line of Control (LoC) and conducting internal security and counter-terror operations aimed at maintaining peace and stability in the region.
He succeeds Lt Gen Prashant Srivastava, who has been appointed Quarter Master General (QMG) at Army Headquarters in New Delhi. During his tenure, the Chinar Corps carried out several significant counter-terror operations and strengthened coordination among security forces, with a strong focus on operational effectiveness and civil-military engagement.
