Jammu, May 22: Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern Command, visited the TRINETRA Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in Akhnoor to review the progress of AI-driven military technologies being developed to support the Indian Army’s modernization efforts.
The visit highlighted the Army’s growing focus on integrating advanced technologies into operational systems under its long-term reform initiatives, including Army Vision 2047 and the ongoing “Decade of Transformation.”
During the visit, Lt Gen Sharma was briefed on several AI-enabled applications designed to strengthen battlefield awareness, accelerate decision-making, improve surveillance, and enhance operational preparedness. Officials explained how technologies such as predictive analysis, automated data processing, intelligent decision-support systems, and AI-assisted assessments could help commanders respond more effectively in complex security environments.
The TRINETRA AI Lab in Akhnoor is part of the Indian Army’s broader effort to build indigenous innovation hubs focused on emerging military technologies and future warfare capabilities.
The Northern Command chief reviewed these projects in the context of Army Vision 2047, which aims to prepare the force for next-generation warfare through modernization, digital integration, indigenous innovation, and network-centric operations. The “Decade of Transformation” initiative similarly focuses on restructuring military capabilities through technology adoption, logistics improvements, and enhanced combat readiness.
Lt Gen Sharma emphasized the importance of innovation and technological adaptation in maintaining operational preparedness amid rapidly evolving threats and increasingly technology-driven conflicts.
During his interaction with officers and personnel, he appreciated the formation’s efforts to develop practical AI-based solutions aligned with the Army’s strategic objectives. He also commended the personnel for promoting a culture of innovation within the force.
The visit comes as militaries worldwide increasingly invest in artificial intelligence to improve intelligence gathering, logistics, surveillance, command systems, and combat efficiency. For formations operating in sensitive areas under Northern Command, AI-enabled systems could play a crucial role in terrain monitoring, threat assessment, resource optimization, and operational planning.
Military leadership has consistently maintained that technological advancement is intended to complement—not replace—human judgment and leadership in operational decision-making.
Lt Gen Sharma’s visit reflects the Indian Army’s broader push to build a future-ready force capable of responding effectively to both conventional and emerging security challenges through indigenous innovation and advanced technology integration.
