
Udhampur, April 18: A day-long technical expert panel discussion on maintaining ecological balance in the Mansar–Surinsar lake ecosystem, with special focus on the carrying capacity of fish and turtles, was held at Eco-Hut Mansar under the chairpersonship of Commissioner Secretary, Forest, Ecology & Environment, Sheetal Nanda.
The meeting brought together senior officials including PCCF & HoFF, PCCF (Wildlife)/CWLW, Chief Conservator of Forests Jammu, scientists, academicians, and local stakeholders to deliberate on conservation strategies and sustainable management of the twin lakes.
Addressing the participants, the Commissioner Secretary stressed the need for a comprehensive action plan to preserve the ecological integrity of the lakes. She underlined the importance of active community participation, especially involvement of youth and local residents, in spreading awareness and ensuring long-term conservation.
PCCF & HoFF Sarvesh Rai highlighted ongoing efforts for turtle conservation and breeding programmes. He informed that the water level in both Mansar and Surinsar lakes remains stable, and water pumping systems have been installed to regulate excess water and maintain the littoral zone. He added that water levels have improved by about 4–5 feet this year due to sustained departmental efforts.
PCCF (Wildlife) & Chief Wildlife Warden Chaturbhuja Behera proposed several measures including improved cleanliness, relocation of the cremation shed as per local demand, contour trenching, and systematic handling of pollution-related concerns. He also stressed awareness campaigns on sustainable fishing practices and suggested relocating fish from Mansar Lake to safer sites in consultation with local communities.
The panel also discussed afforestation initiatives and forest fire control measures aimed at strengthening ecological resilience in the region.
