January 23, 2026 | BK News Service

Srinagar, Jan 22: At his workshop in Lal Bazar, 70-year-old Abdul Aziz Bazaz is transforming walnut wood into intricate works of art that showcase Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage. A nationally acclaimed artisan, Bazaz has recreated elaborate Sozni shawl patterns on wood—an unprecedented innovation in Kashmiri woodcarving.

With nearly 40 years of experience, Bazaz meticulously reproduces floral motifs, traditional designs, and Arabic calligraphy using hand-made tools of his own creation. His standout work includes a detailed wooden depiction of Dal Lake and its surroundings, attracting collectors and tourists from across India and abroad.
Despite never attending formal school, Bazaz’s skill has earned him national and international recognition, including the prestigious Shilp Guru Award. He has trained over 400 young artisans, passing on traditional techniques and encouraging innovation to keep the craft alive.
“Perseverance, creativity, and cultural continuity are key to preserving any art,” Bazaz says, reflecting his lifelong dedication to sustaining Kashmir’s woodcarving heritage.
