MC Bla intensifies market checks during Ramadhan

March 16, 2026 | Nisar Malik

Baramulla, Mar 15: The Municipal Council Baramulla has stepped up weekly market inspections during the holy month of Ramadhan, with the drive set to continue until Eid-ul-Fitr. The checks are being carried out to monitor rates, weights, hygiene standards, and the use of polythene bags, particularly in food manufacturing units such as bakeries, chicken and meat shops.

Chief Executive Officer MC Baramulla, Farhana Showkat, emphasized that shopkeepers must refrain from using polythene bags, which pose a major threat to the environment. She appealed to consumers to carry bags from their homes when purchasing items, thereby reducing reliance on polythene.
Highlighting the challenges of maintaining cleanliness in the town, Farhana Showkat noted that Baramulla has a population of nearly 60,000 but only 80 sweepers are deployed daily. “It is not possible for the department alone to keep the town clean. Locals must also take responsibility for their surroundings, including drains and nallahs, and avoid polluting them,” she said.
She assured residents that on the occasion of Eid, the town will be thoroughly cleaned and all necessary facilities will be provided by the department. The CEO reiterated that collective efforts from both the administration and the public are essential to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment.
