Muharram is the first month of Islamic calendar. This sacred month has many core themes woven in its body.
Moharam is remembered the most because of the tragedy of Karbala. The tragedy of Karbala embodies the pinnacle of patience (sabr). The supreme sacrifice by Hussain (A.S) will be remembered till the end of universe .The philosophy of Karbala that occurred in the month of Mohram is to uphold patience. Imam Hussain in this month of Moharam offered supreme sacrifice for Islam in Karbala with utmost patience. His six months son , Ali Asgar was smittin by poisonous arrows . The chest of his 18 year old son was pierced by an iron rod. His sister Zainab ( A.S) lost his all family members for the sacred cause that is to prevent adulteration of Islam. The arms of Hazrat Abass (A.S) , brother of Imam Hussain (A.S) were detached before his death . Six years old Sakina , Hussain's daughter lost her life in the dark prison of Yazid.
Hussain ( A.S) along with his family, the progeny of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) were besieged in the desert and denied drinking water from the Euphrates river for three consecutive days in the scorching heat in the month of Moharam. Allama Iqbal says :
The tale of Karbala is poor , simple and vibrant ,
Hussain is the ultimate foundation of ," Their is no God but Allah ",
Hussain is the true power and strength of righteous path.
Hussain (A.S) redefined fraud , dishonesty and political expediency against truth or Haq . The tags fraud, dishonesty and polical expediency go with Yazeediyat . The tags like truth or Haq , sincerety and patience goh with Hussainiyat . Iqbal rightly said:
Haqiqat e abadi hai maqaami e shabbiree,
Badaltey rahtey hain andaaze Kufi wo Shami.
In this month of Moharam more than 1400 years ago Hussain ( A.S) taught the ultimate lesson of patience or sabr in the way of upholding Islamic principles. Those who emulate philosophy of Hussain ( R.A) in the contemporary world are respected and honoured every where. Their courage is praised everywhere. Those who follow the characters of Yazid like political expediency are dishonoured. The world is watching.
Iqbal(R.A) beautifully summarised it as
Sidq e Khalil (A.S) Bhi Hai Ishq,
Sabr e Hussain Bhi Hai Ishq,
Maarka 'ay Wajood Main Badar o Hunain Bhi Hai Ishq.
The truthfulness of Abrahim ( A.S ) is but a form of love , and so is the patience of Hussain . And so are Badr and Hunain in the battle of existence.
Hussain urges all muslim ummah to reject compromise with evil , remain firm in your conviction and speak truth. His legacy of eternal resistance against evil powers should be cherished. Hussain (A.S) taught humanity that living under tyrant is worse than death He said ," To me death is nothing but happiness ,
And living under tyrants nothing but living in a hell".
Khawaja Ajmeri (R.A) explained Hussain (A.S) as
Shah ast Hussain , badshah Ast Hussain .
Deen ast Hussain , deen panah ast Hussain .
Sar dad na daad dast , dar dast e Yazeed .
Haqaa ke bina e La ilaha ast Hussain.
Ruler is Hussain , Emperor is Hussain .
Faith is Hussain , guardian of faith is Hussain .
He offered his head , but not his hand into the hand of Yazid.
Truly Hussain is the very foundation of" La illaha"( There is no God but Allah).
Hussain (A.S) is respected across all sects irrespective of religion and region . According to Thomas Carlyle, english historian and philosopher , " the best lesson which we get from the tragedy of Karbala is that Hussain and his companions were rigid believers of God . They illustrated that the numerical superiority does not count when it comes to the truth and the falsehood . The victory of Hussain (A.S), despite his minority marvels me".
It is rightly said :
"Kya sirf musalman kai piyarai hain Hussain (A.S).
Charkh e noau bashr kai tarai hain Hussain( A.S).
Insaan ko bedar tu holanai do.
Har koam pakarai gi hamarai hain Hussain(A S).
Is Hussain(A.S) beloved of muslims only.
Hussain(A. S) is the guiding star of the human galaxy.
Let humanity awaken first .
Every nation shall claim ,"Hussain ( A.S) is ours".
The month of Muharram gives ample opportunities to reach to the audiences and spread the fragrant message of Karbala in it's true essence. Hussain(A.S) taught the unforgettable lessons of patience, resistance against tyrant and steadfastness. We must tolerate the critics and dismantle their falsehood by the weapon of patience. The importance of Ahlybait, the family of our Prophet ( PBUH) , is
to Islam like light is to the sun and fragrance is to flower. Take away light from the sun and the fragrance from the flower the nomenclature will change.
