Rain, snow brings dip in temperatures
Srinagar, April 5: Rain and snowfall is likely across Jammu and Kashmir on April 7 and 8 with the MeT warning of thunderstorms, hailstorms, and gusty winds that may impact normal life in several areas.
According to the MeT forecast, wind speeds are expected to reach 40–50 km/h during the period, accompanied by thunder activity and intermittent precipitation across the region.
The forecast indicates that weather conditions are expected to worsen on April 8, which is likely to witness more intense activity, including thundershowers and stronger winds in multiple districts.
The expected spell of adverse weather has raised concerns over possible flash floods and landslides, particularly in vulnerable and mountainous areas.
Authorities have cautioned that localized disruptions cannot be ruled out during the peak activity period.
Farmers have been advised to take precautionary measures to protect crops and avoid field activities during the period of intense weather. The advisory also urges travelers to plan journeys carefully, especially in areas prone to landslides and waterlogging.
The weather system is expected to affect both plains and higher reaches, with snowfall likely in elevated areas while rainfall dominates in lower regions.
People have been urged to remain alert and follow official advisories as conditions may change rapidly during the two-day period.
Meanwhile, rain in plains and snowfall in higher reaches has led to a drop in temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir.
According to data released by the India Meteorological Department, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 18.6°C, down from the previous day, while the minimum settled at 6.7°C.
Pahalgam recorded a maximum of 15.7°C and Gulmarg at 7.8°C. Kupwara and Qazigund also reported a dip in day temperatures.
In the Jammu region, Jammu city recorded a maximum of 30.1°C, while Banihal, Batote and Bhaderwah experienced cooler conditions following rainfall.
The department said light to moderate rainfall was recorded in several parts, with Kokernag receiving 14.6 mm and Banihal 8.5 mm of precipitation in the last 24 hours.
