Min Sharma stresses affordable healthcare, regional dev

Jammu, June 6: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Information Technology, Youth Services & Sports, Transport, and Science & Technology Satish Sharma on Saturday called for affordable healthcare and stronger medical research to ensure access to world-class treatment facilities for all.

He was speaking at the National Cancer Survivors Day event at the American Oncology Institute, Batra Hospital, where he interacted with cancer survivors, doctors, researchers and healthcare professionals.
Commending the resilience of cancer survivors, the Minister said their journey serves as an inspiration and underlined the need to strengthen healthcare systems for timely and effective treatment. He stressed that rising medical costs must be addressed to ensure advanced healthcare remains accessible to all sections of society.
Sharma also highlighted the importance of integrating scientific innovation with preventive care, early diagnosis, nutrition, mental health and public awareness to improve cancer treatment outcomes. He said technology and research should be effectively used to enhance healthcare delivery across the region.
Later, speaking at a public meeting in Chowki Choura, the Minister highlighted the region’s development potential and reiterated the government’s focus on balanced growth in rural and border areas.
He said improving road and rail connectivity would boost trade, tourism, market access and investment. He specifically emphasised developing railway infrastructure in the Akhnoor–Kaleeth–Dori Dager belt to enhance economic opportunities and improve local livelihoods.
The Minister also stressed skill development, entrepreneurship, digital empowerment and sports promotion to harness youth potential and build a self-reliant economy. He called for coordinated efforts between government and communities to ensure inclusive and sustainable development in Jammu and Kashmir.
