Prophet Muhammad (SAW) being the perfect man excelled in every dignified sphere of life. With his great teachings, he transformed the lives of the barbaric and uncivilized tribes of Arabia and enabled them to realise their potential
If we look at the history of the world, we see a galaxy of great personalities, but no personality looks perfectly comprehensive in all respects. In some personalities we find the worldly aura but they lack the spiritual aspect, in some we find the dominance of monastic traits but they don’t have an experience of practical family life. Some resort to the display of political and military power but lack the capacities of proving amnesty to their subjects. Some resort to maintaining aristocratic standards of life but at the same time lack the qualities of giving proper respect to the poor of the society. In this galaxy of the greats, there is only one person who possesses a comprehensive and balanced personality and is a model of perfection for whole humanity and that is Prophet Muhammad (SAW). He has been sent as a role model for all ages. Allah mentions in the Holy Quran:
“In truth, in Allah’s Messenger, there is for you a most perfect and beautiful model.”
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) being the perfect man excelled in every dignified sphere of life. With his great teachings, he transformed the lives of the barbaric and uncivilized tribes of Arabia and enabled them to realise their potential. As a result, they not only rose from the abyss of ignorance but also became everlasting beacons of enlightenment.
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was appointed by the divine decree as the teacher of mankind. In the Holy Quran, God says that it is His great favour upon the mankind that He sent down His beloved Prophet so that he may teach them the book (Quran) and the wisdom (Hikmah). It is reported that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) once said,
“Verily, I have been sent as a teacher.” {Ibn Majah 229}
It is reported in Saheeh Muslim that a companion of the Prophet (SAW) namely Muawiyah Bin Hakam (RA) once said,
“I have never seen in my life a teacher like Prophet Muhammad (SAW) {537}
The main feature of Prophet Muhammad's (SAW) teaching was that he believed in what we call 'educating by example ' and ‘learning by doing’. The Messenger of Allah represented and expressed what he wanted to teach through his actions, and then translated his actions into words. How to be just and truthful at all times, how to be in awe of God, how to be humble, how to prostrate with deep feelings, how to bow, how to sit in prayer, how to cry to God at night-all of these he first did himself and then taught to others. As a result, whatever he preached was accepted immediately in his house and by his followers, for his words penetrated all of their hearts. After him, humanity saw his standard carried everywhere by people raised on the wings of sainthood, purification, devotion to God, and desire to be close to Him. Wherever they went, they walked in the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). If all pedagogues gathered and merged their acquired knowledge about education, they could not be as effective as Prophet Muhammad (SAW). It was due to his efforts that many of his descendants have shone among their respective societies like a sun, a moon, or a star. He brought up his companions so perfectly that none of them left the mission he provided them.
Many world-renowned great personalities like Hazrat Abu Bakar (RA), Hazrat Umer (RA), Hazrat Uthman (RA) and Hazrat Ali (RA) were raised in the school of Muhammad (SAW). We come across numerous great historical figures in other schools of education as well but the disciples of Muhammad (SAW) are altogether different, they fully follow the footsteps of their teacher i.e., Prophet Muhammad (SAW). God has honoured humanity with those great heroes, eminent statesmen, invincible commanders, inspired saints, and great scholars. Truly there is no one like Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in every aspect of life. Here are some points regarding education that led to the total transformation of Arabia at the hands of Prophet Muhammad (SAW):
1.The first revelation sent to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was ‘Iqra’ i.e. read, implying that education is the base of the faith.
2.Before constructing the first Mosque, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) established a learning centre (school) by the name of ‘Dar ul Arqam’ in Mecca.
3.In Madina , Prophet Muhammad (SAW) established a residential academy by the name of ‘Suffa’ in which many companions were trained in religious matters and they were called “Ashab ul Suffa”. Abu Hurairah (RA) was one of them who reported thousands of Ahadith of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
4.Prophet Muhammad (SAW) freed the non-Muslim captives of the War of Badr on the condition that they would teach reading and writing to the Muslims.
5.Prophet Muhammad (SAW) motivated his companions to attain knowledge even if they have to go to China and made attaining knowledge a religious obligation.
6. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) trained thousands of his students in the form of ‘Suhaba’ who became a great source of knowledge. He inspired the rulers like Hazrat Abu Bakar (RA), Hazrat Umar (RA), Hazrat Uthman (RA) and Hazrat Ali (RA). Hazrat Ali was called “Gateway of the City of Prophetic Knowledge”.
7.It is reported that before Islam, there were just 17 people in entire Mecca who could read and write but Prophet Muhammad (SAW) prepared hundreds of Suhaba who could read and write.
