What was once a lifeline for the people of South Kashmir, the Nalla Rambi Ara, has now turned into a ‘Khooni Nala’—a death trap—due to rampant illegal mining. Despite repeated complaints to the Geology and Mining Department, no concrete action has been taken against corrupt officials allegedly involved in facilitating this unlawful activity.
The local population has raised serious concerns over the ecological devastation caused by unchecked extraction of sand, gravel, and boulders. The Rambi Ara, which once provided clean water and supported agriculture, is now a symbol of destruction, leading to erosion, loss of aquatic life, and even posing threats to human settlements.
According to sources, illegal mining mafias, allegedly in collusion with officials, continue to plunder the resources of Rambi Ara, despite government regulations prohibiting unscientific extraction. The inaction of authorities has sparked outrage among the residents, who are now demanding a CBI probe into the matter.
"We have filed multiple complaints with the Geology and Mining Department, but no action has been taken. Instead, the officials turn a blind eye while the mining mafia operates fearlessly. The situation has become unbearable," said a local activist.
Environmentalists warn that if immediate action is not taken, Rambi Ara may soon lose its identity completely, leading to irreversible damage to the region’s ecosystem. Residents have now decided to escalate their protests and have urged the Lieutenant Governor and the Central Government to intervene.
With allegations of corruption deepening, the demand for a high-level investigation into the matter is growing louder. Will the authorities wake up before it’s too late, or will Rambi Ara continue to bleed under the weight of illegal mining?
