Natipora- Nowgam road stretch irks commuters , demand macadamisation

June 20, 2025 | BK News Service

The residents and commuters of Srinagar’s Natipora–Nowgam stretch continue to grapple with deteriorating road conditions, as repeated appeals for repair and macadamization remain unaddressed. Despite numerous protests and public outcry over the years, authorities—particularly the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department—have failed to take concrete steps to restore this vital arterial road.
The approximately four-kilometer road, connecting important localities such as Natipora, Naikbagh, and Nowgam, serves as a critical link in the city’s southern transit network. However, years of neglect, poor maintenance, and lack of timely interventions have reduced the once-functional road into a crumbling mess of potholes, broken surfaces, and clogged drainage systems.
Local residents allege that despite multiple complaints filed with the R&B Department and municipal authorities, no action has been taken to begin macadamization or fix the faulty infrastructure.
“It’s not just a road anymore; it’s a daily battle. People are risking their lives every time they drive or walk through this stretch,” said Javaid Ahmad, a local shopkeeper from Naikbagh.
The pothole-ridden stretch poses serious safety concerns, especially for two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. Waterlogging during rains—caused by ineffective or non-functional drainage—adds to the hazards, often hiding deep craters and leading to minor accidents and vehicle breakdowns.
“Just last week, an elderly man fell off his scooter because of a pothole submerged in rainwater,” said Zareefa Jan, a resident of Natipora. “It’s shameful that no one is held accountable.”
Despite multiple public demonstrations in 2016, 2017, and again in early 2025, authorities have failed to act, and public warnings continue to be ignored.
Residents are unanimous in their demand for a comprehensive restoration plan that includes:
The Natipora–Nowgam road is not just a stretch of broken asphalt—it symbolizes the broader issue of delayed governance and civic apathy. While authorities continue to make announcements and float tenders, on-ground implementation remains invisible.
Until urgent measures are taken, thousands of daily commuters and residents will continue to pay the price with their time, money, and safety—waiting for promises to finally translate into action.
