Natipora residents grapple with waste woes

March 07, 2026 | Shugufta Rashid

Srinagar, Mar 6: Residents of Natipora in Srinagar are facing severe inconvenience due to an open dumping site in the area, with locals complaining about a persistent foul smell, unhygienic conditions and the increasing presence of stray dogs.

People living near the site say heaps of garbage remain unattended for long periods, emitting a pungent smell that spreads across nearby residential areas. The situation, they say, worsens particularly during the daytime when the stench becomes unbearable.
Residents allege that the dumping site has gradually turned into a filthy spot, with waste scattered around and attracting stray dogs. Locals say packs of dogs frequently gather at the site in search of food, posing a safety concern for people passing through the area.
“The smell coming from the dumping site is extremely unpleasant. It becomes very difficult for us to even keep our windows open,” said a local resident.
Many residents also claim that the garbage often remains exposed, making the surroundings dirty and unhygienic. They say the area has become a breeding ground for stray animals and insects, further increasing the discomfort for nearby households.
Locals have urged the Srinagar Municipal Corporation to take immediate steps to clear the accumulated waste and ensure regular sanitation in the area. They said proper waste management and timely lifting of garbage would help prevent the situation from worsening.
Residents hope that the authorities will intervene soon and take necessary measures to address the issue so that people living in the locality can get relief from the foul smell and unsanitary conditions.
