
The National Conference and Congress alliance have swept the 26-member Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development council (LAHDC) Kargil polls on Sunday.
The result of all the 26 seats of LAHDC Kargil that went to polls on October 4 was declared today.
NC emerged the single largest party securing 12 seats while Congress won 10 seats.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won two seats while independents and BJP won two seats each. Aam Aadmi Party failed to open their account in LAHDC-K Council.
There are 30 members in LAHDC Kargil. Of the 30 members, 26 are elected through votes while 4 are nominated by the authorities.
The voter turnout for the elections was 77.61 percent, with 74,026 out of 95,388 eligible voters exercising their rights.
The NC and Congress had formed a pre-poll alliance but contested with 17 and 22 candidates, respectively. Both parties clarified that the alliance was limited to areas where they faced tough competition from the BJP.
The BJP, which had won one seat in the last election and later increased its tally to three by incorporating two PDP councillors, fielded 17 candidates this time. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) contested four seats, and 25 Independent candidates were also part of the fray.
The election saw a triangular contest among the NC, Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party in most of the 26 seats.
The previous LAHDC Kargil led by the NC's Feroz Ahmad Khan, completed its five-year term on October 1. The newly elected council members will be in place before October 11.
The election also marked the introduction of electronic voting machines, used for the first time in council elections, at 278 polling stations across the district.
Among others the prominent NC candidates who registered their win are Abdul Wahid who wins from Bhimbhat Constituency with a voting margin of 52 votes, PunchokTashi registered his win from Padum Constituency with a voting margin of 54 votes and Manzoor Ul Husain wins from Yourbaltak Constituency with a voting margin of 90 votes.
Congress Candidate Abdul Hadi won Tai- Suru Constituency with a voting margin of 261 votes and Abdul Samad won from Ranbirpora-Drass Constituency with a voting margin of 575 votes respectively.
BJP Candidate Padma Dorjey wins a triangular contest at Stakchay Khangral Constituency with a voting margin of 177 votes, defeating Syed Hassan of Congress and Ghulam Hussain NC.
