In a powerful tribute to the unwavering dedication and valor of the Assam Rifles, Doordarshan News (Assam) released a special documentary titled “Assam Rifles: Sentinels of the North East – Kartavyam Sarvottam” at a prestigious event held at the Assam Rifles Headquarters in Shillong.
The documentary was officially unveiled by Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General of Assam Rifles, alongside Ankur Lahoty, IIS, Director and Head of Doordarshan News Assam. Senior officers of the Assam Rifles and officials from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting were also present at the release ceremony.
This compelling film captures the legacy, operations, and human face of the Assam Rifles, India’s oldest paramilitary force, often referred to as the “Sentinels of the North East.” The documentary sheds light on the dual role played by the force—ensuring security and fostering development across the region’s remotest and most sensitive areas.
From counter-insurgency operations and disaster response to civic action programmes and humanitarian outreach, the documentary provides a rare glimpse into the courage, discipline, and sacrifice that define the Assam Rifles. Rich visuals, soldier interviews, and archival footage together portray the force’s deep integration with local communities and their tireless service to the nation.
Speaking at the occasion, Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera applauded DD News for producing such a meaningful and insightful film. “This documentary is a salute to the brave men and women of Assam Rifles who operate in some of the most challenging conditions in the country. It showcases not just their operational achievements but also their emotional and cultural bond with the North East,” he said.
Ankur Lahoty, while addressing the gathering, highlighted Doordarshan’s role in public broadcasting and nation-building. “Our aim through this documentary is to bring the incredible stories of Assam Rifles closer to the people of India. It is a reminder of the dedication that safeguards our unity and diversity,” he said.
The title of the documentary, “Kartavyam Sarvottam” (Duty Above All), reflects the ethos of the Assam Rifles and the message it seeks to convey to viewers across the country.
The documentary will be telecast on DD News Assam and other regional platforms, followed by nationwide screenings to raise awareness about the contributions of the Assam Rifles in maintaining peace and development in the North East.
The event concluded with a ceremonial screening and a standing ovation from the audience, reaffirming the pride and respect that the Assam Rifles command in the hearts of the nation.
