Karnah, June 18: In the far-flung border region of Karnah, where access to basic educational resources often remains a distant dream—especially during the harsh winter months—a silent revolution has begun. Anhad, a non-profit organization, started a public library in Tanghdar on 01 December 2024, aimed at providing students with a dedicated, peaceful space to study. In just a few months, this humble initiative has begun transforming lives.
Located in a region that remains cut off from the rest of the Kashmir Valley for over three months due to snowfall, the Anhad Public Library has emerged as a sanctuary for aspiring learners. Prior to this, students had no choice but to travel to Srinagar for a proper library or reading space—an expense and effort not feasible for most families in the border belt.
One such inspiring story is that of Umer Gul, a resident of Karnah who recently qualified the written exam for SSC GD – 2025. With physical and medical rounds ahead, Umer’s achievement is no small feat. He began his preparation in December at the newly opened library and credits much of his success to it.
“I prepared for the SSC GD exam at Anhad Library. The peaceful environment and excellent study facilities there helped me stay focused and motivated. I'm proud to say that I qualified the exam thanks to the support I received while studying there,” said a visibly proud Umer.
His success, however, is just one of many .Students preparing for their JKBOSE board exams have also shown remarkable results. Afreen Khan, a Class 11 PCMB student, scored an impressive 420 marks. Sahil Khawaja scored 448 in Class 10, while Mehreen Khan passed Class 12 with first division and Faizana Hafeez earned a distinction in Class 11. These results mark a clear shift in academic performance since the opening of the library.
“I am very thankful to
Anhad for establishing this library. It helped me a lot in studying,” said Afreen Khan, who dreams of pursuing a career in MBBS.
The library, equipped with essential textbooks, quiet reading rooms, and a supportive environment, is not just a place of learning but a symbol of hope for students living under the shadow of conflict, isolation, and limited resources.
Community elders, schoolteachers, and parents have also welcomed the initiative, calling it a “life-changing step” for the region. “For years, our children have suffered due to the lack of academic infrastructure. Anhad has lit a candle in this darkness,” said a local school principal.
As Karnah continues to battle both geographic and climatic challenges, the Anhad Public Library stands tall—a testament to how small efforts, when rooted in empathy and community spirit, can have a profound impact.
In the words of one young student: “We may live near the border, but now we’re closer to our dreams than ever before.”
