November 03, 2025 | BK NEWS SERVICE

: Department of English, Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir) organised an insightful lecture on “Feminism”, delivered by Prof. Prerna Malhotra, an eminent scholar and academician known for her contributions to literary studies and gender discourse.

According to the organisers, the session aimed to enhance students’ understanding of feminist theory, its historical evolution, and its relevance in contemporary society and literature.

In her opening remarks, Prof. Sandhya Tiwari, Head Department of English, who chaired the session highlighted the objectives of the lecture. Prof. Tiwari reflected on the department’s commitment to introduce diverse intellectual perspectives to its students. She remarked that it was essential to continually revisit feminist frameworks, particularly within the Indian socio-literary context. Prof. Sandhya Tiwari, further added that it’s necessary to bring novel perspectives on feminism, especially in the Indian context. She expressed gratitude to Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A Ravinder Nath and authorities in the administration for their valuable support.

Prof. Prerna Malhotra commenced her lecture by tracing the historical development of feminist thought, beginning by defining feminism as a movement and progressing through the first, second, and third waves of feminism. She elaborated on the critical gendered nature of the construction of binaries and threw light on social scenarios which necessitated the movement for the liberation of the marginalised genders.

Emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of feminism, Prof. Malhotra discussed how feminist perspectives have influenced literature, culture, and critical theory. She examined feminist readings of canonical texts and stressed the importance of giving voice to marginalized and silenced women writers. Drawing on examples from both Western and Indian contexts, she encouraged students to approach literature through a gender-sensitive and inclusive lens.

The lecture also highlighted contemporary debates in feminism, including issues of intersectionality, representation, and post-feminist discourse. Prof. Malhotra urged students to view feminism not merely as a theoretical framework but as a social movement advocating equality, justice, and empowerment.

The session concluded with an interactive discussion, during which students and faculty members posed questions related to feminist criticism, gender dynamics in literature, and the evolving role of women in academia and society.

Earlier, Mr. Sunil Kumar Mannil, Sr Asst Prof. Deptt of English, highlighted Prof. Malhotra’s scholarly achievements. He was the event rapporteur and proposed the vote of thanks.
