
Departments of Communication and Journalism (DCJ) and Information Technology (IT), Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir) continued the Students Induction Programme for newly admitted students with a message on health and well-being on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Mushtaq Chalkoo, noted laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon. emphasized that good health—both physical and spiritual—is essential for success. “If you are healthy, you can do wonders; if you are unwell, you may ruin your dreams,” he told students, urging them to adopt balanced diets, avoid unhealthy fats, and regulate their lifestyles according to their Body Mass Index (BMI).
He emphasized the importance of spiritual health in overall wellness by highlighting that good health is not limited to the physical body alone, but also encompasses the spiritual dimension. Prof. (Dr.) Chalkoo discussed how spiritual well-being is an essential part of holistic health for any skilled professional. Prof. Chalkoo explained how obesity not only leads to serious illnesses like diabetes and heart disease but also affects mental health, contributing to depression and anxiety.
Prof. (Dr.) Chalkoo’s talk included video demonstrations of his advanced laparoscopic surgeries, providing real-world insight into the evolving field of medical technology and practice. He concluded with a Kashmiri poem, striking a cultural and emotional chord with the audience.
In his speech, Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Shahid Rasool, said that health goes beyond physical fitness, extending to mental and emotional stability. “A healthy mind and body help students think clearly and manage stress effectively,” he said and encouraged the newcomers to maintain balanced diets, engage in regular physical activity, and avoid lifestyle choices that harm long-term health.
Dr John Babu Koyee, Sr Asst Prof DCJ, conducted the programme while Dr Zahoor, Sr Asst Prof, Deptt of IT proposed the vote of thanks.
