Knowledge is a collective pursuit to which all cultures have contributed

June 30, 2021 | Shaheen Suhail

The session was organized by Falcon Club 29 June 2021 with title Islamic mathematics, and speaker was Dr Fozia Qazi where she extol Falcon club for inviting her in the session.

She started her talk on the definition of Islamic mathematics. Islamic mathematics means the progress and discoveries in mathematics in any region of the world ruled by Muslim rulers , the mathematicians there can be non- Muslims or Muslims.
Then she shared the beautiful screen with the map of Islamic world of the 9th century. Then the session run smooth starting with the Islamic scholarship.

Islamic Scholarship

??Knowledge is a collective pursuit to which all cultures have contributed.
??Islamic scholarship began with the house of wisdom - a library and research center built in Baghdad in 8th century.
??Translation of books from many cultures including Greek, Chinese ,Indian ,Persian. etc
??Paper mill founded in Baghdad, transmission of knowledge became easy.
??The time period 700-1200 C.E. is regarded as the golden age of Islamic civilization and Baghdad was its intellectual center.
??Many important contributions made after 1200 C.E as well.
??Muslims made significant contribution in many fields.
Then the Mam discussed none other than the Father of algebra Al-Khawarizmi.

Al-Khwarizmi

His full name was Muhammad Bin Musa Al -Khawarizmi and was born in 780 C E in Khawarizm ( now Khiva, Uzbekistan ) . H was scholar at the house of wisdom in Baghdad. He invented Algebra and wrote a book about it called " Kitab ul Jabr Wal Muqabal" ( Book of restoring and balancing") . He was also an astronomer and a geographer and constructed the map of Known world and he was also first to write a book about the decimal number system in about 825 CE . His book in Arabic didn't survive (only a Latin translation) but 150 years later Khushyar b Labban wrote another book on arithmetic whose Arabic text survives. This decimal system was developed by Muslim Mathematicians from an older and incomplete Indian system. Also they ( Muslim mathematicians) extended the system of fractions.
Also the other major contributors other than Al Khawarizmi are Al- Karaji, Al- Uqilidisi , and Al-Kashi.
Then the Mam showed the slides on Uqlidisi's use of decimal fraction. After that the screen was beautiful with Khayyam's contribution.
Khayyam was born around year 1048 in Nishapur Iran. He got his early education in Nishapur under famous teacher Imam Muwafiq , then he moved to Samarkhand(Uzbekistan) at age of 22 and wrote his important book on Algebra during this period . In 1073 Malik Shah, the Seljuk sultan invited him to Isfahan to set up an observatory and to lead a team of scientists in calendar form. Sultan's Vizir Nizam ul Mulk became the patron . He worked there for 18 years. Then he left Isfahan after the death of Malik shah and Nizam ul mulk and died in 1133.
His most significant contribution to Mathematics was a complete classification of cubic equations and he gave case by case analysis of the cubic equations and their geometric solutions, Indeed he was great scholar and we can see this by his saying," we have tried to express these roots by algebra but have failed ,it may be however that people who come after us will succeed ". It took over 400 years before a group of Italian mathematicians were able to find algebraic solutions.
There are many other Muslim Mathematicians, astronomers and scientists who made great contributions. Also the Mam discussed the plagiarism by Copernics on Al Tusi's " Tusi couple" .
