Srinagar, Nov 15: The casualties are feared after a massive explosion inside Police Station Nowgam in outskirts of Srinagar at midnight.
Sources said the massive blast took place inside Police Station Nowgam, where the explosives most probably the ammonia nitrate seized from the terrorists arrested after busting of inter state “white collar” terror network, was kept.
The loud explosion was heard in the area and adjoining areas as well. The glass and window panes of the houses in the area were damaged.
Many vehicles parked in the police station were damaged and caught fire in the explosion.
Sources said many police men and officials and civil personnel were present in the police station at the time of the blast.
“The incident took place during a routine inspection and sampling process involving a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, local police personnel, and a Tehsildar (revenue official),” they said.
The seized ammonium nitrate-based explosives were stored at the police station. The expolsive material was confiscated during ongoing investigation into a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror module.
The module, involving medical professionals, was uncovered after JeM propaganda posters appeared in the Nowgam area on October 19. This probe led to multiple arrests across Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi, and seizure of over 2,900 kg of explosives, chemicals, and arms—some of which were linked to the deadly car bomb blast near Delhi's Red Fort on Monday evening in which 12 persons were killed.
Sources said casualties are feared in the blast in the Nowgam police station.
“Eight injured policemen have been hospitalised,” they said.
The emergency response teams including fire services quickly rushed to the spot and made efforts to douse the fire. The ambulances also rushed to the spot and ferried the injured to hospitals.
Sources said it may be an accidental blast but investigation will be launched to ascertain the exact cause of the explosion that has taken place amid heightened security in the Valley.
