
The Department of Linguistics at the University of Kashmir (KU) hosted a special lecture titled “Open World: Diverse Cultures and Dialogic Consciousness” at the university’s main campus on Wednesday.
The lecture was delivered by Prof. Lakshmi Bandlamudi, a distinguished Professor of Psychology at LaGuardia Community College, City University of New York. Prof Bandlamudi is an expert in cultural psychology and human development and is renowned for her work in Bakhtinian studies.
In her engaging talk, Prof. Bandlamudi explored the concept of dialogism, as theorised by Russian philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin. She discussed its broad relevance across disciplines and emphasized its importance in today’s interconnected and dynamic world.
"Dialogism is not just about conversation, it is a way of being in the world, of engaging with others while allowing space for difference and growth,” she said.
Prof. Bandlamudi further explained that dialogism extends beyond language, representing a deep ethical and philosophical framework for human interaction and understanding.
In his welcome address, Prof. Musavir Ahmed, Head Department of Linguistics KU, underscored the value of such scholarly events in fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and critical thought.
The session concluded with remarks by Prof. Javid Ahmad from the Department of Political Science, KU who lauded Prof. Bandlamudi’s insightful contribution to promoting cross-cultural academic exchange.
