It was unprecedented that vandalism ,rowdyism and violence erupted during midnight at Kolkata hospital where some days before the barbaric and savage act of rape of a female doctor took place that too in the dead of night in the seminar hall of the hospital .It is very unfortunate that violence rocked that very hospital and the window panes ,furniture ,equipment other paraphernalia was attacked and damaged .Even the doctors other hospital staff and patients and their attendants were misbehaved and some of the medical staff was manhandled .The situation was a free for all as thousands of men with sticks ,bricks and stones entered the hospital and created horror .
Hundreds of people smashed through police barricades to storm the RG Kar Medical Collage & Hospital in Kolkata early on Thursday wrecking the emergency unit ,several wards and medical equipment at the government facility where a junior doctor was raped and murdered last week ,even as the streets were full of the vandals .Hours after a mob vandalized the doctors protest site at emergency ward of the hospital in early hours of August 15 ,junior doctors ,students and nurses continued their agitation against the rape and murder of a female doctor on duty through independence day with renewed vigor .The mob violence ,reported after midnight on Thursday ,also prompted health care providers and an umbrella body of doctors unions to resume a nationwide strike.
The streets throbbed with irate protesters in midnight marches that crisscrossed the city despite the mob violence that attacked the hospital and caused panic &,grief to the hospital staff and to the patients in the emergency unit of the hospital .It is the best example of lawlessness and it showed that there is no fear of law in the society as the goons stormed the hospital and created terror and caused much loss to the hospital equipment .One fails to understand as to who was behind the violence in and out of the hospital and all this should be looked and probed? It is a moot question that was the vandalism and violence done for destroying the evidence of the rape and murder of the female doctor before the CBI’s on spot visit of the hospital? Such questions are doing rounds among the people .The big question is why did not police had the information of the gathering of people in hundreds and thousands and if the police new about it why did they allow the assemblage of such a big number who created violence and terror in and around the hospital which has become infamous for the rape and murder tragedy .
The midnight violence and vandalism obviously hints towards the fact that there is no fear of the law and law enforcing agencies .Police has arrested 12 people in connection with the vandalism ,which also opened up the latest chapter in a political firestorm that has ensnared the state ,with chief minister Mamata Banerjee accusing Left groups and the BJP of the violence and the opposition retorting that the mobs were backed by the ruling TMC to sabotage the investigations. Meanwhile ,the CBI team visited the rape victims house in North 24 Parganas district ,a day after it kicked off its probe in the heinous crime that has sparked nationwide outrage and sweeping protests for justice .
The mob violence ,reported after midnight on Thursday ,also prompted health providers and an umbrella body of doctor’s unions to resume a nationwide strike .A mob stormed into Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College & hospital post midnight and destroyed hospital property .A large group of unidentified men stormed into the Hospital around 12.04 am on Thursday and destroyed hospital property at rampant in the middle of junior doctors ongoing agitation against the August 9 rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor that the CBI started probing earlier in the day on court orders .The attackers did not spare the emergency ward where even medicines were destroyed .The police immediately resorted to baton charge and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the mob that allegedly came from several directions .A number of police vehicles were also attacked and vandalized .Several police personnel guarding agitation doctors and the hospital were also wounded by the irate mob .
The vandalism instantly affected the nightlong street movement organised in Kolkata and district across West Bengal by citizens condemning the 31-year –old junior doctor’s murder and safety for women in the state .students and citizens who took part in agitation outside Jadavpur University ,located more than 10 Kms away from RG hospital gheroed the Jadavpur police. ’’We could see the troublemakers assembling outside the hospital much before the attack started and requested police to take steps but they did nothing .When the rampage started the policemen rushed inside the hospital premises to take shelter .The police commissioner directly blamed the social media and a section of online news outlets for the attack saying malicious campaigns regarding the 31 –year –old doctors murder triggered the attack. ‘’ Unfounded information and false allegations were being constantly spread on social media. This led to the attack .I am saying as commissioner of police that no effort was made at any level to shield anyone .We promptly arrested the prime suspect .
We said there should be others and investigations are on .But there was a continuous effort to malign the police,’’ said Goyal to the media at the trouble site .Sanjay Roy 31 ,a civic volunteer working for the Kolkata police ,was arrested on August 10 as the prime accused in the crime which took place at the third floor seminar hall in the hospital’s chest department between 3 and 5 am on August 9.A CBI team from Delhi visited the crime scene and talked to the hospital staff hours before Thursday night’s attack .The violence took place hours after TMC chairperson and chief minister Mamata Banerjee hit back at the opposition and announced back to back agitation by her own party starting August 17.’’The agitation will take place at all community blocks and municipal areas of Bengal demanding justice for the victim and capital punishment for the accused..’’ Banerjee announced at a pre-independence Day event of the TMC ,targeting the BJP and CPI-M that have backed the people’s movement since August 9.
While ordering the CBI probe ,the DB of Calcutta high court chief justice TS Sivagnanam and justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya appealed to agitating doctors to join duty for the sake of patients .The BJP reacted sharply to the midnight incident .’’Who are these vandals and how could they enter hospital despite the presence of the police? Was destroying evidence not enough that an attack on the young doctors had to be organized .The home minister of the state has to give an answer ,’’Bengal BJP Chief said .’’The hooliganism and vandalism at RG Kar tonight have exceeded all acceptable limits .As a public representative ,I just spoke @ CP Kolkata ,urging him to ensure that every individual responsible for today’s violence is identified ,held accountable ,and made to face the law within the next 24 hours ,regardless of their political affiliation .’’Abhishek Banerjee wrote on X .To conclude it can be said that the goons who stormed the hospital at the dead of night should be identified and put behind bars .Besides ,all those accused or suspect in the unfortunate rape and murder of young medico should be arrested and made to face the law of the land .Even Prime minister in his independence day speech said that the wicked person who has committed the heinous crime against female doctor should get capital punishment to create fear of law in the savage elements indulging in savage acts.
