On the 9th anniversary of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, founder of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a gathering at Dara Shikoh, Bijbheara, saw party members and supporters paying tribute to the late leader. PDP President Mehbooba Mufti recalled her father as a statesman who championed “peace with dignity” and tirelessly served the people of Jammu and Kashmir. She highlighted his visionary governance as Chief Minister noting that his leadership left an indelible mark, even in challenging times. Mufti Sayeed’s tenure from 2002 to 2005 was pivotal for the region. Despite holding just 16 seats, his policies focused on the people, establishing security and laying the foundation for a new era in governance. His efforts to bridge the gap between Delhi and Kashmir, as well as his bold moves like opening the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road, facilitated cross-border trade and family reunions, promoting dialogue and reconciliation. In a region still grappling with political instability, Mufti Sayeed’s pragmatic approach—centered on dialogue, mutual respect, and inclusivity—remains a guiding principle for conflict resolution today. Under his leadership, Jammu and Kashmir saw significant advancements in education, infrastructure, and agriculture. His vision also led to the establishment of universities and colleges, benefiting all regions, including Ladakh. Notably, the Prime Minister’s package for the return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits was another landmark initiative during his tenure. Mehbooba Mufti, while paying tribute, contrasted her father’s governance with the current administration. She pointed out, “Mufti Sahab transformed the region despite limited seats. Today, despite a clear majority, the government is silent on critical issues from unjust employee terminations to rising unemployment, and a traumatic process of verification. Ms.Mufti took a dig at the current government urging it to stop dividing the young generation and people of Jammu and Kashmir along quota lines. She called for an end to the ongoing injustice against open merit while ensuring that the rights of marginalized and underrepresented communities across J&K are safeguarded. She reminded that past governments, including her own, ensured that state subjects of J&K were adequately represented and their seats secured. “It is unfortunate that today, instead of creating opportunities and fostering unity, the government is resorting to policies that divide and alienate our youth,” she remarked. She emphasized that Mufti Sayeed’s approach of dialogue and inclusivity, absent today, was essential to addressing the Kashmir issue while in power. “His vision of ‘peace with dignity’ and his belief that dialogue is key to lasting peace will continue to guide our efforts for a just Jammu and Kashmir,” she remarked. The event was attended by senior PDP leaders and supporters, who pledged to carry forward Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s legacy and vision for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
