To combat the menace of substance abuse and promote a drug-free society, Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW), Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir), in collaboration with the School of Education (SoE), organized a documentary screening programme under the banner of “100 Days Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan,” at Tulmulla campus here Wednesday.
As many as 70 scholars and students watched the documentary, which gave a comprehensive and thought-provoking exploration of the drug abuse crisis in Jammu and Kashmir through six compelling thematic segments: “Fading Horizons: The Alarming Scale of Drug Abuse in Jammu and Kashmir,” “Why is Drug Abuse Rising in Kashmir?,” “What Types of Drugs are Kashmiris Using?,” “What Drug Abuse Does to Families, Parents, Society and Communities,” “What Do Drugs Like Heroin Do to a Person?,” and “A Battle We Cannot Lose.” The screening highlighted the devastating consequences of substance abuse on individuals, families and society while underscoring the urgent need for collective action and awareness.
Earlier, Dr. Firdous Ahmad Sofal, Youth Welfare Officer, highlighted the concerns surrounding substance abuse in Kashmir and emphasized the need for sustained awareness, prevention, and community engagement. He stated that under the visionary leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A. Ravinder Nath, the University has launched a comprehensive calendar of activities under the 100 Days Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan aimed at reaching students, scholars, educational institutions and the wider society.
Addressing the participants, Dr. Jehirul Islam, Dean DSW, stressed the importance of active participation in all awareness initiatives being organized by the DSW. He noted that the campaign, conceived and implemented by the varsity under the guidance of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A Ravinder Nath, seeks to foster informed citizenship and social responsibility. He observed that such programmes contribute significantly in building a healthier and more conscious society.
Dr. T. Arun Christopher, Sr Asst Prof. SoE, emphasized that educational institutions must move beyond conventional classroom boundaries and become catalysts for social transformation. He urged students and scholars to become ambassadors of positive change and play an active role in addressing societal challenges.
