Srinagar, May 9: The Pakistani drone attacks on five locations in Jammu and Kashmir including Srinagar airport and Awantipora air base on Friday evening were thwarted by the Indian air defence system.
The attack came a day after India thwarted attempts by the Pakistan military to hit Indian military installations using drones and missiles.
The sky was lit up in Srinagar as the Indian military shot down Pakistani drones near the airport.
Blasts were heard and sirens sounded in Srinagar and south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
In Pulwama, the army's Awnatipora air base came under drone attack.
However, the air defence system intercepted and neutralised the drones, security officials said.
They said drones were sighted also in Baramulla in north Kashmir and were engaged immediately by the air defence system.
In the Jammu region, the Pak launched drone attacks in Jammu targeting Jammu airport and Nagrota.
Multiple loud explosions were heard in both places as the air defence systems engaged the drones.
The complete blackout was enforced in Srinagar, Jammu and other parts of the UT.
In Srinagar, mosque loudspeakers were used to convey to locals to switch off their lights as a precautionary measure.
In Jammu, police made announcements in the afternoon urging shopkeepers to close their shops by 5.30 and calling on people to stay indoors and switch off lights
To enforce the black out, authorities snapped electricity to Srinagar, Jammu and other parts of the J&K.
Sirens were also heard at many parts in J&K alerting the people to remain alert.
Sources said heavy cross-border shelling was underway along the International Border in Suchetgarh and Ramgarh sectors of Jammu and Samba districts and Uri and Karnah in Jammu region.
On Thursday evening, Indian air defence units intercepted at least eight missiles fired by Pakistan towards the border areas of Jammu, including the strategically important Jammu airport, defence sources had said.
The aerial objects had attempted to strike the strategic Jammu airport and its surrounding areas, which house the army, air force, and paramilitary installations.
Tension between the two neighbours soared after the Indian Armed Forces on Wednesday conducted precision strikes targeting terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the April 22 attack by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed.
