Rain triggers waterlogging in Srinagar

April 05, 2026 | Mohmmad Daaish

Srinagar, April 4: Continuous rainfall over the past several hours has led to widespread waterlogging across multiple parts of Srinagar, disrupting normal life and causing inconvenience to residents and commuters.

Low-lying areas of the শহর were among the worst affected, with roads submerged and drainage systems struggling to cope with the sudden surge in water levels. Localities including key residential and commercial zones witnessed accumulation of rainwater, leading to traffic congestion and slow vehicular movement during peak hours.
Pedestrians faced significant difficulty navigating flooded streets, while several shopkeepers reported reduced business activity due to the inclement weather and waterlogged surroundings. In some areas, water even entered ground-floor shops and houses, prompting residents to take precautionary measures.
Officials from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation said dewatering pumps were pressed into service in vulnerable locations, and field teams were deployed to clear clogged drains and ensure faster drainage. Authorities attributed the situation to intense rainfall combined with blocked drainage channels in certain pockets.
Traffic police also issued advisories urging commuters to avoid waterlogged routes and drive cautiously. Public transport services were affected in some areas, further adding to commuter woes.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has forecast intermittent rain over the next 24 hours, raising concerns about further water accumulation if the downpour persists.
Residents have urged the administration to take long-term measures to improve drainage infrastructure and prevent recurring waterlogging during heavy rains.
