The Kiwi Challenge

September 23, 2023 |

The introduction of Kiwi fruit is emerging as a formidable, though still tiny, challenge to the traditional apple cultivation in Kashmir. Kiwis are a relatively new crop in Kashmir, but they have quickly gained popularity among farmers due to their high profitability and relatively low maintenance requirements. There are a number of advantages to Kiwi cultivation over apple cultivation. Kiwis are a high-value crop, and they fetch farmers a much higher price than apples. As compared with apple cultivation, Kiwis are a relatively low-maintenance crop, and they do not require as much pesticide or fertilizer use. Kiwis are more resistant to pests and diseases than apples, which reduces the need for chemical treatments. Kiwis have a longer shelf life than apples, which makes them easier to transport and store. On the other hand, Apple cultivation in Kashmir faces a number of challenges, including climate change which is leading to more extreme weather events, such as hail storms and droughts, which can damage apple crops. Apples are susceptible to a number of pests and diseases, which can reduce yields and increase costs. Kashmir also lacks adequate storage and processing facilities for apples, which can lead to spoilage and lower prices. Apple prices are subject to drastic market fluctuations, which can make it difficult for farmers to earn a stable income. Given the advantages of kiwi cultivation over apple cultivation, it is no surprise that kiwis are becoming increasingly popular among farmers in Kashmir. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the area under kiwi cultivation in the region. The introduction of kiwis is challenging apple cultivation by reducing the area under apple trees. As more farmers switch to kiwi cultivation, the area under apples is decreasing. This may reduce the overall production of apples. The increased supply of kiwis is putting pressure on apple prices. This is making it difficult for apple growers to earn a profitable income. Kiwis and apples compete for the same resources, such as land, water, and labor. This may make it more difficult and expensive for apple growers to produce their crops. In order to support apple growers in Kashmir and mitigate the challenges posed by kiwi cultivation, the government and other stakeholders need to invest in research and development to develop new apple varieties that are more resistant to pests, diseases, and climate change. The government needs to provide financial assistance to apple growers to help them cover the costs of production and marketing, improve storage and processing facilities for apples and promote apples in domestic and international markets. In doing so, apple cultivation will remain a viable and profitable industry in Kashmir.
