Traffic violations incur over Rs 110 crore fine for 5 years in J&K

April 07, 2024 | Ayaan Wani

The Traffic Police Department in Jammu and Kashmir has revealed shocking statistics regarding the prevalence of traffic violations in the region. Over the past five years, from 2019 to 2023, the department has collected a staggering sum of Rs 117 crore in fines from errant motorists and pedestrians.
Breaking down the figures year by year, it's evident that the problem of flouting traffic rules persists. In 2023 alone, fines worth Rs 21.4 crore have been issued to violators. This follows a similar trend seen in 2022, where fines amounted to Rs 34 crore as authorities intensified their crackdown on violations.
The preceding years also witnessed substantial fines, with Rs 25 crore collected in 2021, Rs 19 crore in 2020, and Rs 17.4 crore in 2019. These figures highlight deeply ingrained practices of reckless and unlawful behavior on the roads of Jammu and Kashmir.
Common traffic offenses contributing to the hefty penalties include speeding, reckless driving, running red lights, unauthorized parking, and other violations endangering public safety by disrupting traffic flow.
Over the past five years, Jammu and Kashmir has recorded a harrowing toll of 4251 road accident fatalities, with the National Highway and Chenab Valley emerging as particularly treacherous zones.
On average, two individuals lose their lives daily due to road accidents in the union territory since 2019, underscoring the urgent need for stringent safety measures.
The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway alone has accounted for a significant number of these fatalities, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.
While the issue of traffic violations has plagued the entire region, the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and Chenab Valley have borne a disproportionate burden of the tragic toll.
The alarming trend persists, with 55 individuals losing their lives in 398 accidents across Jammu and Kashmir until January 2023 alone. Last year, 893 lives were lost in 6298 road accidents, with 8469 individuals sustaining injuries. In 2022, there were 805 fatalities in 6092 accidents, resulting in 8372 injuries, while the toll stood at 774 killed and 5894 injured in 4860 accidents in 2021.
