Srinagar, September 7: Veterinary students across Jammu and Kashmir staged a peaceful protest on Monday, demanding an increase in their internship stipend and removal of what they described as a significant disparity with veterinary institutions elsewhere in the country.
The protest was organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Veterinary Students Association (JKVSA), representing students of SKUAST-Jammu and SKUAST-Kashmir. The association said it has been pursuing the demand for nearly three years.
According to the students, veterinary interns at both universities currently receive ₹6,000 per month for six months and ₹9,000 per month for the remaining six months, with ₹3,000 of the latter amount contributed by ICAR.
The students said a proposal for enhancement of the stipend has remained pending with the Finance Department since 2023 despite repeated representations and follow-ups.
The association cited significantly higher internship stipends at several veterinary institutions across the country. Its comparison lists monthly allowances of ₹23,500 at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Banaras Hindu University and Kamdhenu University, ₹22,000 at GADVASU, ₹20,000 at WBUAFS, ₹17,000 at LUVAS and KVASU, and ₹14,000 at RAJUVAS.
Other institutions cited by the association include DUVASU, Mathura, where the stipend is listed at ₹12,000 per month, and TANUVAS at ₹11,000.
Students said their internship involves clinical training, field assignments and emergency duties, making the existing allowance inadequate in comparison with stipends offered elsewhere.
JKVSA President Saqlain Rashid said the students were seeking a fair and reasonable revision rather than preferential treatment. The association also referred to a Veterinary Council of India communication dated May 19, 2026, which it said reflected that the issue of stipend enhancement had been raised with the concerned authorities.
The protest comes amid a wider agitation by medical interns in Jammu and Kashmir over revision of MBBS and BDS internship stipends.
The veterinary students, however, said their demand predates the current wave of protests and that their proposal has remained pending at the Finance Department since 2023.
The association has urged the authorities to take an early decision and bring the stipend in line with prevailing rates at other veterinary institutions.
