National gold medalists turn into beacon of inspiration for youth
The Wangoo Sisters, Arzath and Praznath, have emerged as shining stars, inspiring the youth of Jammu and Kashmir and the nation through their outstanding achievements in the sport of Wushu. Daughters of Mr. Vinod Bushan and Mrs. Ranjita Pandita, the sisters hail from the modest village of Traperpora in Shopian, Kashmir, and currently reside in Jammu. Fondly referred to as the "Wangoo Sisters," their success story reflects an inspiring blend of determination, hard work, and resilience.
The sisters began their journey into Wushu at the Khadi Mill Ground in Srinagar, Kashmir, under the mentorship of Mr. Kuldeep Handoo, a Dronacharya Awardee and Chief National Coach of India. Recognizing their potential, Mr. Handoo identified Praznath’s exceptional flexibility and steered her towards the Taolu discipline of Wushu. Both sisters began rigorous training under the guidance of expert coaches. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they supplemented their sports training with yoga, practicing diligently under the supervision of their mother.
A Trailblazing Journey in Sports
Their commitment bore fruit in March 2021 at the 20th Sub-Junior National Wushu Championship in Ranchi, Jharkhand, where both sisters were selected to represent their state. Praznath showcased her remarkable flexibility and skill, earning a bronze medal in the group event. Her performance earned widespread acclaim from coaches and judges, boosting her confidence.
In 2022, the Wangoo Sisters moved to Jammu, marking a new chapter in their sporting careers. Under the mentorship of Coach Mr. Sher Bahadur at the M.A. Stadium, their efforts culminated in a stellar performance at the 22nd Sub-Junior National Wushu Championship in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. Together, they secured four bronze medals across individual and group events, an achievement celebrated by the Wushu Association of Jammu and Kashmir and lauded by Mr. Kuldeep Handoo.
Scaling New Heights
The sisters’ relentless dedication paid off again in March 2024 at the 23rd Sub-Junior National Wushu Championship held in Jammu. Arzath clinched three gold medals, while Praznath secured two gold and one silver medal, propelling the J&K Taolu team to the runner-up trophy. Their journey continued with another remarkable performance at the 24th Sub-Junior National Wushu Championship in Tarn Taran, Punjab, in December 2024. Arzath added one gold and two silver medals to her tally, while Praznath earned a silver and a bronze medal.
Their dominance extended to the Khelo India Wushu Women’s Leagues, where the Wangoo Sisters amassed multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals at both zonal and national levels. In 2024, at the 4th All India Inter-SAI Championship in NSNIS Patiala, Punjab, both sisters showcased their individual brilliance by securing three gold medals each.
A Multifaceted Talent: Wushu and Beyond
