Why India Deserves a Permanent Seat in the UNSC ?

It is this balance of internal stability, legal institutions, and a commitment to international peace that, in my view, makes India highly eligible for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council

As a long-standing advocate for peace, particularly in Kashmir—a region that has consistently drawn the attention of international committees responsible for regulating global peace—I sought to engage with fellow Kashmiris to understand their views on India’s potential permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Before I dive into their opinions, I would like to provide my readers with a brief introduction to the UNSC.
The United Nations Security Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations (UN) and is primarily tasked with maintaining international peace and security. Established in 1945 under the UN Charter, the UNSC has the authority to make binding decisions that all member states are obligated to implement. Currently, the permanent members of the UNSC, commonly referred to as the P5, are China, Russia, France, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
To begin my inquiry, I spoke with Firdous Javid, a renowned speaker and activist from Kashmir’s southern Anantnag district. When asked about India’s bid for a permanent seat in the UNSC, he responded thoughtfully: "Israr, we know that the UN Charter does not provide a strict eligibility framework for permanent membership. Instead, it allows for the expansion of the Security Council through amendments. I strongly believe that India deserves a permanent seat, primarily due to its demographic and economic power. If we look at India in terms of population, it is the second-most populous country, representing a significant portion of the global population. Furthermore, as one of the world’s largest economies, India plays a crucial role in global trade, technology, and innovation." These two are one of the finest reasons to be considered for India’s permanent seat in UNSC, said Firdous.
Following this, I had a phone conversation with a socio-political activist and writer, Advocate Tahir Lone from Handwara. I posed the same question to him: Why do you think India should be granted a permanent seat in the UNSC? Tahir, who has closely followed India's evolution on the global stage, replied thoughtfully:
"As an activist and someone who closely observes international affairs, I've assessed my country through that lens. The most compelling reasons for India’s permanent seat in the UNSC, in my view, start with its regional influence. India has consistently played a pivotal role in South Asian politics, not just promoting stability but also driving economic development in a region marked by geopolitical complexities. Whether through bilateral ties or multilateral forums, India has emerged as a stabilizing force in conflicts and a key partner in regional growth." He continued: "The second reason is India’s expanding global partnerships. India has solidified its position on the world stage as an active member of influential international groups like the G20, BRICS, and the Non-Aligned Movement. These platforms reflect India's commitment to addressing global challenges, from economic cooperation to climate change, and its willingness to take on leadership roles in multilateral diplomacy. India’s balanced approach—bridging the global North and South—further reinforces its claim for a UNSC permanent seat." Tahir’s perspective highlights how India's diplomatic and economic alliances not only boost its global standing but also demonstrate its readiness to contribute significantly to global governance through a permanent UNSC seat.
While I was in Srinagar, I had the opportunity to connect with a young poet, Faisal Aslam. When I posed the same question to him—Why do you think India deserves a permanent seat in the UNSC?—he shared his perspective with passion:
"For me, India is the most deserving country for a permanent seat in the UNSC because it has tirelessly worked for global peacekeeping. India's contributions towards international peace and security are evident on the world stage. Historically, India has been one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions, consistently sending troops to conflict zones to help maintain peace and stability." He continued: "Beyond that, India has actively engaged in diplomacy to resolve conflicts and promote multilateralism. Its recent role in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, for example, has drawn global attention, showcasing India’s balanced approach and commitment to global peace. This diplomatic stance is a reflection of India’s larger vision for peacekeeping, not just regionally but globally." Faisal's perspective underscores India's ongoing efforts in peacekeeping and diplomacy, further strengthening its case for a permanent seat in the UNSC.
Continuing my series of conversations, I visited the home of a close friend, Bariq Zargar, a resident of Sopore, who has been capturing the complexities of Kashmir through his camera during tense situations. When I asked him about India’s claim for a permanent seat in the UNSC, he pointed to India's unwavering commitment to the core values of the United Nations: "As the world’s largest democracy, India upholds democratic principles and human rights," Bariq remarked. "This commitment to democracy is a vital reason why India deserves a permanent seat in the UNSC. Beyond that, in terms of sustainable development, India has taken the lead globally through initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and its dedication to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These are not just symbolic gestures, they reflect India’s proactive role in addressing global challenges like climate change and poverty reduction, he added.
Following this, I reached out to a renowned writer and political activist, Syed Showkat, from Langate. When I asked him the same question—Why should India be granted a permanent seat in the UNSC?—he highlighted India’s crucial role in counterterrorism efforts: “I believe the way India has played an active role in global counterterrorism and in combating extremism strengthens its case for a permanent seat in the UNSC," Syed explained. "India's position in Asia makes it pivotal in addressing both regional and global security challenges. One of the most compelling examples is the return of peace to Kashmir after nearly four decades of unrest. India’s decisive fight against terrorism in the region has almost buried extremism, a testament to its resolve in maintaining security, not just within its borders, but across South Asia”, he added.
Finally, as I wrap up these conversations, I, Israar Shahid, would like to add my own perspective on why India deserves a permanent seat in the UNSC. Beyond the arguments of demographic power, economic influence, peacekeeping, and counterterrorism efforts, I believe it is India's robust legal and institutional framework that truly underscores its eligibility. India's unwavering commitment to the rule of law, democratic governance, and institutional stability creates a strong foundation for global leadership. In a world facing growing authoritarianism and democratic backsliding, India's sustained democratic model, despite its challenges, sets an example of resilience. This stability is not only crucial for domestic peace but also for contributing to global governance. Moreover, India's ability to maintain peace and stability within its own borders, especially in a region as complex as South Asia, highlights its readiness to take on a larger role in maintaining international security. With a legal framework that ensures accountability and justice, India is well-positioned to champion the values of democracy, human rights, and sustainable development at the highest levels of global decision-making.
