Newspaper Reading- Learning beyond Textbooks

Newspaper is an important medium of education and information. Developing the habit of reading newspapers from the early stage of life is an appreciable move. Research shows that students using the newspaper as an educational resource score more highly on standardized tests, develop the habit of lifelong reading, and are more likely to become engaged citizens. Using the newspaper as an educational resource helps students to develop a better understanding of their community, state, nation, and the world; Cultivate critical thinking, reading, and writing skills; Clarify and develop decision-making skills; Improve math and problem-solving skills. This supplementary reading process beyond the prescribed textbookalso enables students to learn things at their convenience and pace. It also develops daily reading habits and writing skills among school goers. They remain much updated about the contemporary events that are happening outside the classroom. It provides information all over the world be it information regarding economics, politics, sports, trade, and commerce so. It is a powerful means to bring socio-political change and ensure a better understanding of people about their rights and duties as citizens and act as the public platform to express views.

Our NIE program also aims to create social awareness and good citizenry among children through newspaper reading. There is a separate fund in schools under the title “School News Fund”. Private schools are charging new funds from the students. But unfortunately, very rare schools are encouraging students to use these newspapers within the school premises. This particular fund either remains unutilized or the school authorities are diverting this fund to other account heads because they don’t consider it as part of education. Different publishing houses associated with daily newspapers include special a page or pages daily or weekly basis for kids that cater to the needs and aspirations of school goers. This platform is giving them opportunities to express their different ideas originating from their inner self. They became able to give shape to their imagination. Their writing, drawing, mathematical, analytical, and critical skills enshrine. After all, they are the future human resource of our society. Parents can also play an important role. They should encourage their growing kids to buy newspapers. Wide coverage of the information is obtained at a low cost through the newspaper .Why shouldn’t we grab this opportunity?” let us create knowledgeable society.
