Nipping The Evil

October 05, 2025 |

The attachment of property worth ₹2 crore linked to Lashkar-e-Toiba’s designated terrorist Sajad Ahmad Sheikh, alias Sajad Gul, in Srinagar is a clear warning to masterminds who have been fuelling the unrest in Kashmir by working in the shadows. In recent years, as Kashmir was gripped under a new phase of violence in which civilians and security forces were targeted, Gul emerged as the face of this vicious cycle of terrorism that is being fought not with guns also but also through propaganda, lies, and manipulation. This Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir based terrorist is an ugly manifestation of the evolution of violence in Kashmir post 2019. Though he may not be in the forests or carrying a rifle, but his weapon has been far deadlier—digital radicalization. From safe houses and remote connections, investigations have shown that he has engineered online propaganda campaigns, including against journalists, incited violence, and glorified terror. His fingerprints have been revealed in the rise of “hybrid militancy” where young men were lured by his poisonous messaging. Against this backdrop, Gul is not a petty side player. Rather, he is one of the chief architects of the recent bloodshed seen by Kashmir. The Srinagar Police, by attaching his family’s three-storey property at Rose Avenue, HMT, has taken a long awaited step. Violence and hatred against an elected government can not be sustained by ideology alone. Rather, it derives its legitimacy from financial oxygen, safe havens and networks of collaborators. When the money channels are choked, it deprives this machinery of required means. The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act has been designed precisely to choke the arteries of terrorism by targeting assets directly or indirectly used to support it. Some may argue that this may lead to unjustified punishment for Gul’s family but this action is also about bringing accountability in society. Srinagar police has said that Gul is an active stakeholder in the attached property, indicating that the house was not just a residence but a symbol of the vicious dual life that terrorists and their handlers live. They enjoy comfort while ordinary youth are pushed into coffins. These actions must not stop here and the government must go even further. Every sympathizer, every enabler, every so-called “activist” who amplifies terror propaganda online should be forewarned that there will be consequences. Social media accounts that parrot anti-national narratives, amplify separatist content, or glorify terrorists are very much part of this ecosystem of terrorism. Those who think they can hide behind anonymity or borrowed slogans are mistaken. The long arm of law will reach them too.
