The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar observed National Sports Day with a series of sporting events and a pledge ceremony, honouring hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary.
Organised by the Students Activity and Sports (SAS) Centre, the event saw enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and staff. A fitness pledge was taken to promote health, fitness, and sportsmanship.
Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman described sports as crucial for student development, saying, "Celebrating this day is our way of paying tribute to the Wizard of Hockey, whose legacy continues to inspire generations."
DSW Prof. Abid Bazaz and other faculty members emphasized integrating physical activity with academics, promoting balanced development. NCC Officer Lt. Dr. Nitika Kundan and NSS Coordinator Dr. Pramod Kumar Yadav highlighted the role of sports in nation-building and holistic education.
The event marked the start of week-long celebrations at the Institute, including sports debates, indigenous games (Kho Kho, Kabaddi, Pithu), yoga sessions, and cycling events. The theme this year, "Ek Ghanta, Khel ke Maidan Main", urges people to dedicate at least an hour daily to physical activity.
The programme also promotes Olympic values—Excellence, Friendship, Respect—and Paralympic values—Courage, Determination, Inspiration, and Equality.
