Outrage over VIP suite construction at J&K House Delhi amid room crisis

July 10, 2025 | BK News Service

The Jammu and Kashmir House in New Delhi — a facility intended to provide affordable accommodation for J&K residents — is facing a storm of criticism after the controversial demolition of its fourth floor to construct exclusive VIP suites. The move, which comes amid a worsening room shortage, has triggered accusations of elitism, mismanagement, and lack of transparency.
The demolished floor earlier housed functional rooms used primarily by patients, students, and government employees visiting Delhi for medical or official purposes. In its place, the Resident Commission is reportedly constructing luxury suites for high-ranking officials, allegedly using recycled construction materials — raising safety and accountability concerns.

Public outcry over room crunch

Locals say the shortage has made it nearly impossible for ordinary citizens to secure rooms, forcing many to turn to costly private lodgings. “Getting a room at J&K House was already tough. Now it’s nearly impossible,” said Feroze Ahmad, a Srinagar resident accompanying his father to AIIMS.

Elitism over public welfare?

Activists and civil society groups argue the renovation reflects misplaced priorities. “Instead of expanding or upgrading existing infrastructure for public use, the administration is reducing capacity to cater to VIPs,” said an RTI activist who has sought information on the project’s cost and scope.
The use of old materials for new construction has further raised red flags about structural safety and transparency. Critics question whether a proper tendering or approval process was followed.

Mismanagement and opacity alleged

Sources within the department claim the renovations are being carried out without a master plan or public consultation. “No one knows the exact cost, who the contractors are, or why old materials are being reused. It reeks of mismanagement, if not corruption,” said a retired bureaucrat familiar with the operations of the Resident Commission.
Despite multiple RTI applications and growing public concern, no official statement has been issued by the J&K Resident Commission. The silence has only added to the suspicion.

Demands for probe and transparency

Legal experts and activists are now calling for an independent probe and a comprehensive audit. “Public facilities should serve the people, not just the elite. There needs to be transparency and accountability,” said Delhi-based advocate Asif Mir.
Once considered a critical support hub for residents in distress, the J&K House is now being seen as a symbol of administrative disconnect. With rooms reduced, transparency lacking, and discontent growing, critics are demanding immediate action to restore the facility's original purpose — serving the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
